The Hampton University School of Pharmacy invites applications for a highly motivated individual to serve as Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences for a twelve-month, full-time faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or higher. An appointment will be made as soon as a suitable candidate is identified, with a start date no later than July 1, 2023.

Founded in 1868, Hampton University is a leading historically black university (HBCU) located on the Virginia Peninsula in the City of Hampton. It is a privately endowed, co-educational, nonsectarian institution. The School of Pharmacy is seeking Pre-Candidate Status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education, and if approved, will award the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. It is located on the east coast of Virginia in the picturesque Hampton Roads area that includes the cities of Hampton, Norfolk, Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Newport News. The University seeks to motivate and prepare students to achieve at the highest academic level. Students develop and demonstrate a sense of character within themselves and in their relationship with others. Students are taught to embrace those personal values, which make them responsive to the social, economic and more problems affecting our society.


Description of the Position:


The School of Pharmacy seeks an accomplished individual with a broad vision for the department and a strong interest in pharmaceutical research. The individual will lead a team of productive junior and senior researchers who are actively engaged in teaching and research, with active extramural funding.


The Chair of the Pharmaceutical Sciences department will work in close collaboration with colleagues in the Department of Pharmacy Practiceto implement and develop the educational offerings of the School of Pharmacy to include the proposed PharmD program, the undergraduate Bachelors in Science inPharmaceutical Sciences program, and minors in Public Health, Environmental Health, and Pharmaceutical Science. In addition, the Chair will be responsible for developing new programs that will expand the scope of the department and help augment the profile of the School in areas that are in high demand.


Duties and Responsibilities

A successful candidate will:

  • Have a strong vision that aligns with that of the School of Pharmacy and implements actionable goals and objectives that drive transformative growth of the department.

  • Provide leadership in developing as well as providing oversight and administrative supervision over all educational and professional programs.

  • Actively participate in various Departmental, School, and Institutional planning and evaluation.

  • Manage the research and teaching responsibilities for departmental faculty to ensure both the quality of the academic program and a balance workload across the Department.

  • Conduct annual evaluations of departmental faculty and staff and make recommendations pertaining to salary adjustments and personnel actions to the Dean.

  • Be a strong student advocate, and supervise the progress, academic discipline, grievance, and general welfare of students.

  • Integrate the expertise of current faculty with new faculty hires in a manner that will drive pharmaceutical research, pedagogy, and collaboration with the other units within the School.

  • Be actively engaged in faculty development and mentorship, effectively manage the departmental resources,and budget, and serve as an integral part of the School’s Executive leadership team.

  • Promote team-based collaborative research and scientific programs along with researchers, educators, and practitioners both within and outside the School.

  • Represent the Department and the School across both the University and externally.

  • Maintain an active pharmacy practice along with a scholarship program and teach in assigned courses.

  • Perform other duties as requested by the Dean.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

  • Hold a PhD (or equivalent degree) with strong academic credentials expected for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.

  • Have at least three years of experience in a leadership position in higher education, with an emphasis on Pharmaceutical Sciences or related discipline.

  • Have a consistent record of scholarship andgrantsmanship, and a dedication and track-record of effective teaching, and of service.

  • Provide demonstrable evidence of strong interpersonal, leadership, communication,and management skills.

  • Demonstrable evidence of commitment to diversity and inclusion in research, teaching, and service.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Active funding from federal agencies.

  • Leadership experience within a professional PharmD program, with demonstrable ability to effectively manage faculty and staff.

  • Demonstrable knowledge of current trends in pharmaceutical sciences and in research that may be a focused interest of the Department.

  • Professional recognition within local, regional, national, and national and international pharmaceutical and research-based organizations.
