General Responsibilities: The Bilingual Family Liaison will speak a language in addition to English and work to increase parent and family involvement in schools by establishing effective communication between home and school. The person in this position will work with students to maximize their school experience. While the majority of their time will be spent out in schools interfacing directly with students and families, this position will also be present in the Hanover community engaging in outreach and supporting training opportunities for families that will impact the academic performance of our students who are learning English. Essential Duties: (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)Connect with students, parents and families through phone calls, home visits, and meetings at schools or in the division, in order to encourage participation in school and/or division activities and events. Provide information through multiple means (on-site meetings, virtual meetings, print materials) to parents concerning district policy and procedures such as registration, curriculum, assessments, and code of conduct. Contact outside community agencies for the purpose of seeking resources and activities to support the health, wellness, social, emotional, and academic needs of students and families. Work with these agencies to help increase participation of families in school and provide parent training opportunities.Participate in neighborhood outreach to answer questions and provide information and resources. Work with school teams and division support personnel to provide targeted support to students and families.Perform related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must be fluent in English and a second language particularly in the areas of speaking, reading and writing.Must have flexibility to work some evenings and weekends during parent and/or community events.Knowledge and experience working with families.Ability to take initiative in coordinating and organizing activities and events.Ability to accurately collect, organize and maintain data and information.Preferred SkillsFluent in ArabicEducation and Experience: Education: Valid Va. Driver’s License. Must meet the qualifications of "highly qualified" under No Child Left Behind Act of 2001: Has passed the Paraprofessional Assessment with a minimum score of 455 orHas a minimum of 48 college credits orA minimum of an Associate's Degree. High school diploma or recognized equivalent. Experience: Minimum of one year’s experience working with families and communities, advocacy, community development, or program administration.

Physical Conditions: Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Frequent walking, standing, lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted, and other physical activities are required. Movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals, regular stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching and significant pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions are also required. Work is performed in the child/family's natural environments. Required to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Attendance to meetings outside the normal duty hours is often required.
