Position Summary:

Prepares and cooks nourishing food for residents and guests under sanitary conditions as directed and in accordance with established policies and procedures and in accordance with State and Federal guidelines

Education / Licensure / Registration /Certification Requirements:

  1. Prior experience in cooking strongly preferred
  2. Prior experience in a long term care environment preferred but not necessary
  3. Must be at least 18 years of age, have knowledge of foods, food preparation, food distribution, and methods of cooking
  4. Must have knowledge in the use of common kitchen equipment
  5. Must have knowledge of elementary math
  6. Must complete state approved coursework regarding modified diets and sanitation within 90 days of employment

General Job Functions:

  1. Production of quality food products by standardized recipes
  2. Serving meals at the required temperature
  3. Serving meals at the required times
  4. Oversees 1-2 dietary assistant positions
  5. Prepares meals, including special diets and blended foods
  6. Cleans and sanitizes assigned equipment and work areas
  7. Replenishes food supply in the kitchen from storerooms and freezers
  8. Assure the safe storage of food in compliance with state regulations and facility policies
  9. Assures kitchen equipment is used in a safe manner and remains in working area
  10. Advises supervisor when supplies are low
  11. Read and understand Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all supplies and use according to directions
  12. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, dietary cardex and procedure manuals.

Physical Demands:

  1. Frequently required to lift and/or move 25 pounds
  2. Occasional lift and/or move 25 to 40 pounds
  3. Infrequently required to lift and/or move over 50 pounds
  4. Frequently required to carry up to 25 pounds and occasionally carry up to 50 pounds
  5. Frequently require to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear; and taste or smell
  6. Frequently required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl

Work Environment:

  1. Regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and fumes or airborne particles.
  2. Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; extreme heat and risk of electrical shock
  3. Occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold and vibration
  4. Noise level is usually loud
  5. Substantial exposure to sharp-edged utensils and containers
  6. Frequent work interruptions
