What are the responsibilities and job description for the Controller position at Harcum College?
The Controller works integrally with the all areas in Finance including the Business Office of the College. It reports to the VP of Finance and Administration/CFO. As a senior leader in Finance, the Controller directs and maintains accounting functions and related activities in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations in support of the mission of the College. The Controller also provides operational direction and supervision to Accounting, and indirect supervision to other financial stakeholders concerning presentation and recording of accounting and related financial information. The Controller is responsible for the College monthly closing of books, its accuracy and reconciliation, as well as the annual external audit and taxes.
The position is critical to the College, helping to ensure its sustainability. The ideal candidate must be highly knowledgeable in finance, accounting, and compliance matters and possess strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills. Navigating the unique financial challenges of higher education, such as managing endowments, grants, and tuition revenue is significant.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Manage the daily and month end closing activities of the Finance Office, including general accounting and reporting; deferred revenues; payroll; grants and contracts; investments; accounts receivable, tuition, fixed assets, student loans, and bank reconciliations.
- Review existing processes and timely interface of all financial data with other administrative systems and fewer manual steps.
- Prepare preliminary audited financial statements; oversee preparation of audit work papers, supplementary information, notes, and trial balance. Manage all audit matters including: due dates; data requirements; reconciliation spreadsheets; and all closing and adjusting entries for year-end close.
- Oversee the day-to-day operations and supervision of accounting.
- Prepare internal financial statements and financial analysis monthly
- Manage the compilation, preparation and submission of the 990 IRS form including all necessary schedules
- Be proactive in establishing procedures and internal controls, and assign workload to staff to ensure business activities are accurately, timely recorded, and reported.
- Identify effectiveness/efficiency objectives and metrics.
- Maintain and promote a strong work ethic and adhere to all college standards
- Clearly communicate, orally and in writing, financial policies, procedures, and concepts to accounting and non-accounting personnel.
- Manage temporarily and permanently restricted funds, ensure that all donor restrictions are met and reconciled timely.
- Monitor and implement changes in accounting pronouncements and new any requirements applicable to the college.
- Review Federal student fund disbursements and drawdowns.
- Serve as an integral partner in developing, implementing and monitoring strategic and longer term planning.
- Collaborate effectively with internal/external colleagues, and provides support and may represent the CFO at internal and external meetings
Qualifications/Skills:
BS in accounting or related field with strong emphasis in accounting
Plus 5 years of progressive experience as an assistant controller or controller
Three years of supervisory experience
Great interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated experience with automated and integrated accounting and administrative systems technology.
Proven analytical ability
Experience with OMB Circular A-133 audit and 990 preparation and submission
Qualifications of preferred candidates:
MBA or Master's degree in related discipline from an accredited institution
Public accounting experience
Active CPA license
