PART-TIME (adjunct) INSTRUCTOR GENERAL STUDIES - Developmental English and College Orientation
HARCUM COLLEGE in Bryn Mawr, PA, a leader among the nation’s independent associate degree colleges, is currently seeking adjunct instructors for evening developmental-level English and college orientation courses for the Fall 2024 semester. These seven-week courses will have both a synchronous Zoom session (one four-hour meeting per week - 5:30pm-9:30pm) and asynchronous activities in Canvas.
HARCUM COLLEGE provides its students with an opportunity for outstanding academic, career, and life preparation. We teach, mentor, and prepare students for success in their chosen profession in an experiential environment. Harcum seeks part-time instructors to teach developmental-level English courses (IAD 100) and College Orientation and Study Skills (IDS 103).
The Developmental English course provides an authentic academic context for reading and writing practiced together and sequenced effectively to improve mastery of both as integrated modes of thinking and communicating. The purpose is to prepare students to subsequently apply these academic literacy skills in English 101 and other college-level courses.
The College Orientation course is designed to guide students in their academic, personal, civic, and cultural development. Information literacy is introduced, assisting students in developing effective research strategies and skills necessary to conduct college-level research and facilitate lifelong learning. The purpose is to prepare the student to have a successful academic and personal experience at the college.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Create an effective learning environment using pedagogical and differentiated approaches designed to engage diverse student learners and promote positive student-instructor interactions.
- Conduct classroom activities that consistently support course learning outcomes and promote active student participation.
- Grade student work, provide detailed and timely feedback to students, connect students to appropriate resources, and maintain accurate records of student progress.
- Foster a safe environment that respects the diversity of individuals and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student's ability to learn.
SALARY RANGE
$2000-$2100 per course
WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED IN THE POSITION
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's Degree in English, or related field.
- Demonstrated ability in teaching, including success in using strategies that engage students and are differentiated to meet their needs.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate with a diverse group of students and staff.
