Brief Position Overview:
Under the supervision of the Wellness Veterinarian and Director of Veterinary Operations, the Clinic Veterinarian Technician participates in clinical and animal care activities that support the Veterinary Public Health Pet Wellness program. This position also serves as support to other sections as needed.
Duties & Responsibilities:
50% Harris County Pets Clinic Functions
- Performs physical exams on animals including a variety of animal health procedures encompassing diagnostic laboratory tests, administers vaccines/medications, and assists with or performs medical treatments.
- Prepares prescribed medications with proper labeling as directed
- Collects laboratory samples and performs in-house testing and preserves those samples that must be shipped offsite for more comprehensive testing
- Performs radiographic examinations based on the instructions and under the guidance of the attending veterinarian
- Responsible for cleaning and stocking medical areas and maintaining diagnostic equipment
- Ensures all instruments and equipment are properly sterilized/disinfected and stored
- Using protocols responsible for the safe induction of anesthesia, monitors animals while under anesthesia and during recovery.
- Assists the veterinarian with surgery, including sterilization of instruments and surgical area, animal prep and monitoring of vital signs; monitors post-operative recovery and reports changes in condition.
- Cleans and stocks the medical & surgical areas, maintains surgical equipment, and sterilizes instruments.
- Schedules appointments
- Prepares appointment room(s) prior to scheduled patient visits
- Assists the veterinarian with routine patient appointments and procedures.
- Prepares the invoice and collects payment for the client
- Responsible for routinely performing an inventory of veterinary drugs & vaccines and reporting results to the veterinarian.
- Routinely evaluates health and temperament of sheltered animals and advises the veterinarian and/or the kennel supervisor as appropriate.
- Administers prescribed medications as directed and administers vaccinations per VPH protocols.
- Promotes responsible pet ownership and answer questions concerning animal health, behavior, and care.
- Responsibilities include other duties as assigned, including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event.

- High school diploma or equivalent
- At least six (6) months of experience in an animal shelter, veterinary practice or animal care environment is required
- Completion of a veterinary assistance or technical program.
- Must be comfortable working with animals.
- Must be able to cope with the difficulties associated with animal euthanasia.
- Must have or be able to acquire the skills needed to provide humane animal restraint, place indwelling catheters, and perform venipunctures.

Education- Associate’s Degree.
- Current licensure as a Veterinary Technician with the Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)
