POSITION SUMMARY:

This position, in collaboration with other stakeholders develops and implements a rigorous instructional health and medical science program and provides related educational services for students. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Graduate of an accredited college or university in an approved program of study.
  2. Holds or is eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Health and Medical Sciences.
  3. Possesses outstanding knowledge and skill in the assigned instructional area and demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching and learning in a project-based environment.
  4. Strong communication skills and the ability to guide 9-12th grade students through complex problems as they develop new skills and understanding.   
  5. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse students, staff, parents, and the public.
  6. View feedback and self-reflection as a tool to improve and grow in teaching responsibilities.
  7. Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns.  Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and seek collaborative working relationships with students, families, staff, co-workers, and community agencies.
  8. Effectively demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions. 
  9. Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  10. Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks.  Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities.  Respects the worth, dignity and individual differences of others.
  11. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present to diverse audiences to foster professional relationships and express and/or exchange ideas.  
  12. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  13. Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology with experience using Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and email.
  14. Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Knowledge of at least one health and medical science-related disciplinary topic (e.g. introduction to healthcare fields, medical terminology, billing/coding, etc.) to facilitate project-based classes.  Experience working in Sports Medicine is desirable. 
  2. Building a classroom culture in which students learn health and medical science areas/topics through project-based, hands-on, and experiential means.
  3. Prepares students to follow a rigorous pathway from novice to advanced classes by motivating them to engage in properly leveled coursework that empowers individuals to think critically and take ownership of their advancement.
  4. Advise students in the co-curricular organization related to healthcare (HOSA-Future Health Professionals).  Prepare students for leadership roles, competition and participation in local, state and national conferences.
  5. Interest in developing strong relationships with local healthcare-focused businesses for student mentorship and partnership opportunities.
  6. Prepare students for college and career by developing their skills/competencies according to a state-approved list in each course.
  7. Takes all industry standard precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  8. Maintains appropriate state licensure; assumes responsibility for and participates in staff development (professional growth) and training to keep materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date.
  9. Follows appropriate safety procedures and properly maintains equipment.
  10. Actively participates in and attends all required meetings.
  11. Maintains confidentiality when appropriate.
  12. Complies with and supports school division policies, regulations, procedures, and the HCPS Strategic Plan.
  13. Effectively performs other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently.  Regular travel throughout the school and effectively interact with students, staff, and community members.  Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; and subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.  Regular contact with staff members is required.  Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

EVALUATION:

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of administrative or licensed personnel.
