Fellowship Community Engagement Manager

Job Summary


This is a full-time, benefits eligible, two-year term limited position ending in June 2026 with a possibility of extension.

Harvard Radcliffe Institute Fellowships are awarded each year to approximately 50 exceptional scientists, writers, scholars, public intellectuals, practitioners, and artists whose work makes a difference in their professional fields and the larger world. Throughout the year, fellows regularly convene to share their work in progress. Coming from diverse disciplines and perspectives, each year, they form a robust intellectual community within which they challenge each other's ideas and support each other's ambitions.

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Fellowship Program, the Fellowship Community Engagement Manager is responsible for organizing and delivering an impactful fellowship experience in collaboration with other program staff. Primary duties include:
  • Collaborates with and supports the executive director in executing the fellowship department's strategic goals and fostering innovation in all aspects of the fellowship program administration.
  • Actively supports the development of new components to the fellowship program.
  • Actively contributes to strategic problem-solving; also serves as primary contact for fellows during their fellowship year; responding, resolving, or triaging typical and complex issues.

Position Description

  • Supports the Executive Director of the Fellowship Program in building a robust sense of community through the management of ongoing programmatic events; identifying new opportunities for fellows to share their interests; proactively generating new ideas/opportunities to deepen fellows' engagement and broadening fellows' capacity and reach across the Harvard University community.
  • Builds and supports a Fellowship Alumni Network: Develop and implement a fellowship alumni engagement strategy to support and grow alumni connections in alignment with HRI's mission and strategic priorities
    • connect alumni to current fellows,
    • cultivate alumni relationships in recruitment efforts and donor engagement/management,
    • develop alumni engagement events to engage fellowship alumni meaningfully.
  • Builds strong relationships with fellows and serves as the main point of contact for any issues arising from the fellows' individual experiences of living in a new city, joining a new organization, and integrating into and forming a community with new people from a range of diverse backgrounds.
    • Works to gain a clear understanding of fellows' issues. Resolves matters under their remit and triages the remaining ones to the most appropriate members of the fellowship staff.
    • Acts as primary contact and liaison for the fellows, supports fellows during their transition to HRI and provides professional and personal support for both fellows and their families during their fellowship year.
    • Oversees the fellowship program's planning and implementation, including but not limited to fellows' onboarding, events, interest groups, social events, etc.
    • Acts as a strategic collaborator with the Executive Director in ensuring that the fellowship program meets its goal of delivering a high-quality, generative, and fulfilling experience for diverse fellowship classes.
  • Ideates, conducts, and evaluates fellowships surveys; analyzes impact and outcomes to drive success and make programmatic improvements.
  • Supports the development of guidelines, policies, and procedures required for the smooth running of the fellowship program.
  • Partners in developing a robust communication and recruitment strategy for reaching potential candidates to the fellowship program; supports the selection process, as needed.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Provides supervision of assigned staff, students, and contingent workers to support the fellowship program.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities according to the Institute's / University's management policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include hiring and training, planning, and assigning work, conducting performance appraisals, addressing performance issues, and resolving problems.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree is required, plus relevant combination of training and experience
  • Five years of progressively responsible administrative or program management experience preferably in higher education or non-profit sectors.

The incumbent in this position will have: excellent interpersonal, group presentation, and facilitation skills; demonstrate commitment to multidisciplinary programming and foster diversity, inclusion, and belonging in all facets of the fellowship programming; demonstrate the ability to create and manage processes with time-pressed stakeholders efficiently and effectively; ability to generate and integrate new ideas to improve processes beyond conventional approaches; ability to communicate effectively at all levels with people from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds. The incumbent will be self-motivated and manage multiple priorities under deadline with attention to detail, exercising discretion and judgment in working with and evaluating confidential material. Master's degree or higher; prior experience working with university academic programs and strong computer skills, especially with community-building tools and platforms, are preferred.

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
