BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P ND CLAIMS Department of the P LEGAL Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)


JOB FUNCTION:

Investigates, evaluates, negotiates, and settles (1) liability claims (general, auto, and bodily injury) made against Hawaiian Electric and its subsidiaries (collectively, the "Company") and (2) Investigates, evaluates, pursues, and settles claims on behalf of the Company for property damage committed by outside parties. Responsible for the administration of the Company's Self-Insured No-Fault program.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Conducts field and in-house investigations to settle claims filed on behalf of and against the Company to assure proper management of Company funds related to liability and recovery incidents.
  • Administers the Company’s self-insured automobile no fault program to ensure compliance with Insurance regulations and statutes, including preparing and submitting the self insurance report to the State.
  • Directs handling, disposition and settlement of all general, auto, and bodily injury claim lawsuits through interaction with adjusters, attorneys, various internal departments, and corporate personnel.
  • Answers all interrogatories, obtains evidence, and arranges depositions in defense of general, auto, and bodily injury related lawsuits. Represents the Company in court for insured and uninsured claims. Travels, as needed, to attend and perform job functions requierd by the position.
  • Maintains the computer-based claims information system for claims management, claims processing, risk assessment, cost control and other analytical reports.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response. Other duties as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of adjusting general, auto, and bodily injury/no-fault type liability claims; normally acquired through advanced adjusting experience with large commercial insurers or large businesses.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of general accounting and business normally acquired through successful completion of college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical transmission and distribution systems.
  • Basic understanding of general, auto, and bodily injury/no-fault type liability insurance policy language and terminology.
  • General independent adjusters license desirable, and/or, willingness to obtain.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and/or mainframe systems and related software applications such as claims processing systems, Microsoft products (excel, word, powerpoint), Adobe, and graphics.

  • Highly developed interpersonal skills. Must be a self-starter with the ability to work both independently, and with those of different disciplines and management levels, within and outside the Company.
  • Excellent written, oral, listening, and comprehension - communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate the basis/rational of liability, complex systems, calculations, concepts, and issues to audiences of varying knowledge and backgrounds in writing and verbally.
  • Ability to work under pressure and be flexible in a demanding and changing work environment. Ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Effective negotiation skills.
  • Ability to consistently research, follow up, and seek out the information necessary, from internal and external resources, and to complete thorough investigations on a timely basis.
  • Exhibits good judgment, common sense and a high degree of professionalism in asserting self and possesses the confidence of following through on claims and other assignments.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license. Must meet the standards for frequent required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy.
  • Ability to handle confidential matters and materials discreetly and professionally.
  • Must be able to commit/adhere to the position’s schedule requirements.

  • Several years (3-5) general adjusting experience and a few years of adjusting no-fault claims.

Location: Honolulu – Oahu, Maui, or Hawai'i Island - may be required to travel inter-island on a regular basis.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the CLAIMS ADJUSTER [Req ID 8985] position is $76,500.00 to $97,600.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
