As a hospital social worker you will assist our patients in dealing with the effects of hospitalization. Patients and families are often under a lot of emotional pressure and financial stress due to illness or injury. Additionally, there are needs that need to be addressed after discharge such as home care or rehab services. You will help our patients and their families navigate the process of illness and injury, from hospitalization to recovery.
Responsibilities:
The Child Life Specialist is responsible for assessing the emotional, developmental, and diversionary needs of hospitalized children and their families, and plans and implements therapeutic interventions to minimize stress and anxiety on an inpatient and outpatient basis. When need arises, will perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Plans, initiates, and supervises activities that foster continued growth and development, such as providing play materials for patients in play areas and at the bedside, based on daily information concerning the health condition, developmental level, interests, etc.
- Provides opportunities for adaptation to the hospital environment and an understanding of medical experiences by providing play materials, opportunities for medical play, and developmentally-appropriate information.
- Supports children, youth, and caregivers throughout the challenges of hospitalization and illness by identifying and encouraging effective coping techniques.
- Prepares children, youth, and families for medical and surgical procedures, cognitively and emotionally, through play, demonstration, and/or dialogue. Provided support (accompanying child to procedure or operating room, being present during a procedure) as part of the treatment plan to decrease stress and anxiety.
- Provides guidance, support, and supervision to students and volunteers.
- Observes, documents, and reports relevant information relating to the patients as it pertains to Child Life, and works in collaboration with the family and health care team regarding the care of the patient.
- Plans, implements, and evaluates a goal-oriented plan of care and documents assessment information, goals, interventions, incident reports, and progress notes.
- Collaborates with members of the health care team and communicates Child Life issues of pediatric health care by participating in multidisciplinary rounds, team meetings, and case discussions.
- Maintains the playroom environment, toys, equipment, and supplies used in the program to ensure patient safety and to meet departmental standards
- Works collaboratively with other members of the department/program in the development, preparation, and implementation of orientation programs and education information.
- Participates in the planning and implementation of special events and in the organization of entertainment for patients and families.
- Works in collaboration with other hospital departments such as Foundation, Volunteer Services, and Community Relations to meet the needs of patients and families.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited College/University with a Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s preferred) in Child Life, Family Studies, EEP, Human Development or other related field, and successful completion of 480 hours internship under a certified Child Life Specialist.
- BLS (AHA) upon hire.
- Certified Child Life Specialist through the Association of Child Life Professional within 12 months of hire.
- Two years previous hospital experience preferred with understanding of children’s illnesses, medical terminology and supervisory skills.
