Job Summary and Qualifications

I. Position Summary: This position supports the mission of Presbyterian/St Luke's Medical Center of optimizing the quality of life of all those served by expanding beyond the traditional focus on medical needs to the needs of the whole person.

The Supervisor of Laboratory Support Services, organizes and directs the daily activities of the pre-analytical laboratory personnel. Supervises the administrative, technical and organizational operations of the laboratory services and send out department and staff. Prepares a work schedule to provide adequate coverage and effective utilization of personnel. Supervises and participates in the orientation of new employees, staff development, in-service, evaluation and documentation of competency and corrective action of the personnel. Provides technical instruction and training to personnel and/or students. Maintains, implements, adheres to and enforces departmental operating policies and procedures to include all programs, quality assurance and safety. Evaluates current procedures and maintains a procedural manual at least annually in accordance with CAP and other accrediting agency guidelines. Interfaces with the pathologist, Laboratory Director, departmental Supervisors and all customers. Demonstrates competency in the performance of phlebotomy procedures as they relate to specific age groups (neonate, child and adolescent, adult, geriatric), teaching and monitoring all functions including but not limited to scheduling, specimen collection, labeling, receiving, send-outs, processing and delivery. Establishes and maintains a preventative maintenance program and log system for all applicable instruments. Ensures all applicable instruments are in good working condition, recognizes malfunctions, takes corrective action and reports to laboratory director as needed.

When need arises, will perform other duties as assigned by Laboratory Director.

II. Position Requirements:

A. Licensure/Certification/Registration: N/A

B. Education: Associates or Bachelor's degree in life sciences or medical technology or equivalent 5 years in a Lab Lead/Supervisor position required.

C. Experience: 3-5 years' phlebotomy experience in the clinical laboratory required. Demonstration of leadership abilities, 1-2 years supervisor experience preferred but not required.

D. Special Qualifications: Must be able to perform phlebotomy in a lead position and manage multiple shifts. Must have knowledge of routine and send out testing. Must be able to make independent decisions and demonstrate effective oral and written communication. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate well. Consistently performs multiple technical task and assignments independently. Extensive knowledge, skill and commitment to Customer Service. Must be detail oriented and highly organized.

III. Degree of supervision required: Performs essential functions with minimal supervision; coordinates efforts on a daily basis with other Technical Laboratory supervisors, managers and/or directors. Individual proceeds on his/her own initiative, in compliance with the philosophy, policies, procedures and practices of the hospital. Pathologist(s) serve as a clinical resource and provides interpretation on certain tests before release of data. Meets regularly with Lab Director.
