General Statement of Duties


HCPS OPPORTUNITY SCHOOL

Starting in the 2023-24 school year, Henrico County Public Schools will designate select schools with high rates of vacant positions and provisionally licensed staff as Opportunity Schools through the HCPS Career Ladder. This is a new pathway within the Career Ladder through which entire schools, selected by HCPS, receive compensation supplements, additional staffing resources and specialized professional learning.

The Middle School Innovation Center provides educational experiences where students are actively involved in their learning journey, understand the real-world implications of their education, and are encouraged to express their knowledge creatively. The goal of the center is to create an environment where students achieve academically, are prepared with the skills to be LifeReady, and feel a deep connection to their school and the world around them.


Essential Duties


  • The physical demands of this assignment include the ability to sit and stand for extended periods and the ability to lift and move items weighing up to 25 pounds.

    Professional Expectations:

    • Design learning experiences that foster creativity, entrepreneurial thinking, and community awareness through project-based learning.
    • Incorporate cross-curricular learning to foster comprehensive understanding, stimulate critical thinking, and build connections between subjects, enriching students' educational experience.
    • Utilize data-driven and differentiated instruction to customize learning, catering to the diverse strengths and foundational levels of all students.
    • Collaborate with staff to design and implement individualized learning strategies for all students, including those identified as gifted, multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and students with 504 plans. Utilize a variety of resources and supports to ensure personalized attention to each student's unique educational needs.
    • Utilize assessment data to continuously adapt instructional methods that enhance student engagement and deepen understanding.
    • Develop assessments that monitor academic progress and allow students to demonstrate learning through a wide range of evidence-based options.
    • Provide resources that support student-chosen methods of demonstrating knowledge.
    • Design learning experiences that captivate students, sparking their curiosity and enthusiasm for learning.
    • Leverage educational technology to enhance learning outcomes, including the use of digital tools, platforms, and resources that support instruction and student engagement.
    • Create positive and flexible learning spaces that are safe, inclusive, and learner-centered.
    • Ensure students feel connected to the school community and understand the real-world applications of their learning.
    • Encourage student voice and choice in their learning processes, empowering students to become active participants in their learning journey.
    • Maintain accurate records of student performance, including goal-setting, learning management, and articulation of learning processes.
    • Utilize data in professional learning communities to discuss and implement effective strategies for the design, delivery, and assessment of learning.
    • Partner with colleagues and parents/guardians to create a cohesive support system that connects students to their school and their learning community.
    • Actively engage in ongoing professional learning to remain current with curriculum trends and innovative teaching strategies.
    • Perform additional duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Valid VDOE license with an endorsement in a middle school subject area
  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree and a valid teaching license in the above mentioned curriculum are required
  • Experience in implementing innovative teaching methods and project-based learning.
  • Strong knowledge of educational technology and its effective integration into the curriculum.


Additional Information


This posting is for the 2024-25 SY with an August 12, 2024, contractual start date. Applicants selected for interviews will be contacted by the school.

Minimum annual starting salary:

  • $55,897.48 (Bachelors)
  • $58,580.71 (Masters)

This assignment will include an additional $3,300 annual HCPS Opportunity School stipend.
