What are the responsibilities and job description for the Outreach Program Associates position at Heal the Bay?

About the Organization

Heal the Bay is an environmental nonprofit dedicated to making our coastal waters and watersheds safe, healthy and clean. To fulfill our mission, we use science, education, community action and advocacy. We educate the greater Los Angeles region about ocean conservation, the causes and impacts of water pollution, the need for a resilient water supply, and what we can all do to make a difference. We reach over 150,000 people annually through our Heal the Bay Aquarium, beach cleanups and community outreach programs.

About the Role

Heal the Bay is seeking two part-time Outreach Program Associates for its Angler Outreach Program. The Outreach Associates will educate the shoreline angling community and general public on fishing health risks associated with consuming fish caught in LA and Orange County. The principal method of outreach consists of interviewing anglers, often in multiple languages based on the preferred language of the angler and fluency of the team members. In addition to interviewing anglers, Outreach Associates will disseminate appropriate literature (health advisories, fish catch limits, etc.) to anglers and the public. The outreach will be conducted at eight local piers from Santa Monica Pier to Seal Beach Pier.

Heal the Bay will train team members on fish identification; fishing regulations and health advisories for Southern California; and the DDT and PCB contamination history of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. This is a great opportunity for college level students or concerned members of the community to get involved and make a difference.

Outreach Associates will also be expected to support other Outreach Programs, such as beach cleanups, Speakers Bureau, and tabling outreach at community events.
