Position Summary

The Physician/Medical Director is responsible for clinical direction and oversight of Healthcare Providers in various post-acute facilities, providing in-patient holistic medical services utilizing innovative technologies to improve patient access impacting quality outcomes.  These medical services include planning, directing, and evaluating resident/patient care; examination and treatment of chronic and acute episodic illnesses; and treatment of minor injuries, accidents, and other injuries/illnesses.  Performs elected laboratory testing, writes prescriptions, and diagnoses and treats medical conditions within the scope of their license expertise, protocols, and available equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with the Post Acute Medical Team to provide patients with primary medical care services within the standards of practice and care for facility patients/residents.
  • Acts as a resource person for decisions, planning, and policies affecting the health of residents/patients.
  • Exercises professional judgement and provides consultation to Providers concerning appropriate treatment of residents/patients.
  • Collaborates with Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and facility staff to identify resident/patient needs and helps develop plans to meet these needs.
  • Follows residents/patients in a post-acute skilled nursing facility, inpatient rehabilitation, assisted living, and other post-acute care facilities, as needed for continuity of care.
  • Assists Providers with emergency treatments and more complex procedures.
  • Adheres to facility policies, procedures, and objectives; ongoing quality improvement objectives and safety; and environmental and infection control standards.
  • Serves as a member of committees dealing with health care, to include Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QAPI), and Antibiotic Stewardship, etc.
  • Cultivates a climate of trust and compassion for patients/residents.
  • Remains up to date with developments and best practices in medicine by attending conferences and seminars.

Specific Requirements

  • Proven experience as a physician providing primary care and diagnostic services in a post-acute setting.
  • Experience prescribing appropriate medications, treatments, and health regimens to treat patient/resident health issues.
  • Experience collaborating with other health care professionals in treatment and diagnosis of patient/resident medical issues and conditions, on admission and through discharge planning, as appropriate.
  • Experience working in a team of healthcare professionals, collaborating with them to ensure positive, effective patient/resident experiences in our facilities.
  • Strong understanding of examination methodologies and diagnostics.
  • Excellent knowledge of infectious diseases, their symptoms, and epidemiology.
  • Broad knowledge of common medication, side effects, and contraindications.
  • In-dept knowledge of legal medical guidelines and medicine best practices.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated competency dealing with adults, and geriatric patients/residents.
  • Excellent mentor abilities in providing education, training and guidance to Providers, in the development of their knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Working Conditions

  • May work and provide oversight in multiple facilities.
  • Attends and participates in continuing education programs.
  • Works in department as well as throughout facility, patient homes, and community.
  • Subject to frequent interruptions.
  • Involved with patients, employees, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc. under all conditions and circumstances.
  • Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays, and in other positions temporarily as necessary.
  • Subject to falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc. throughout the workday.
  • Possible exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc.
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of patients.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in a primary care physician role in a post-acute facility.
  • D. or D.O. degree from an accredited United States medical school.
  • Successful completion of a residency program at an accredited healthcare institution.
  • Board certification in primary care or related field from said residency.
  • Current license in the State of Washington
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Department of Public Safety (DPS) registration for prescription writing,
