What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shift Lead position at Hearth Food Garden?

Come join us in cultivating the future of food! Hearth Food Garden is a garden of earthly delights currently being built in the center of Portsmouth, NH. Opening in Winter 2023, we will be a gathering space for community and a celebration of sustainable sustenance. We will introduce perennials, ferments, foraging, gleanings, and therapeutics into familiar comfort foods and - through pleasure - strengthen regenerative farming practices and our food sovereignty as climate change alters our world.

We are seeking a dedicated & driven Shift Lead to maintain Hearth standards for team members!  You will collaborate with our leadership team as well as be a point person for delicious food and expert hospitality.  You’ll help to create seasonal menus that highlight sustainable and locally sourced products, that focus on both flavor and vitality for our guests. Ultimately, you will help to create a destination that becomes synonymous with celebration, sampling, sharing, gifting, and gathering! You will have the freedom to be creative and take risks, guided by our triple-bottom-line principles (People, Planet, Profit).

In addition to obtaining a platform to transform countless lives and the pride of incredible work, you will also earn a highly competitive salary in a fairy-tale ocean-side town filled with culture, surrounded by wilderness, and with an abundance of interconnected farmers.  Every full time Team Member at Hearth also earns:

  • Gain-sharing incentives, crafted to your personal goals
  • Health and disability insurance
  • 401K
  • PTO to support you in having an active and balanced life

Key Responsibilities:

  • Magnetize, develop, serve, mentor, and retain a team dedicated to systems
  • Foster inter-realm, supplier, and guest communication, collaboration and education
  • Oversee task completion and follow-through on Hearth procedures and protocols
  • Accurately following/executing recipes, including safety, maintenance, and cleanliness
  • Proactively identify areas of operational inefficiencies or revenue opportunities and create strategies to improve or pursue, respectively
  • Continually collaborate, refine and update our menu to excite and awaken our guests’ palates
  • Constant tastings of items in your Realm to ensure product excellence
  • Stewardship of Realm, including safety, maintenance, and cleanliness
  • Ambitious pursuit of personal growth and learning in order to be an impactful leader
  • Ability to work a mixed schedule of mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends

What you bring to our Groundbreaking table:

  • 5 years of professional culinary experience
  • 2 years of management experience in a food & beverage space
  • Skilled at following and executing recipes, and giving clear feedback to the Sous Chef
  • Demonstrated ability to attract, inspire, lead and mentor a cohesive team working for the whole and committed to collective development
  • Hunger to create and contribute to innovating in baked goods and flavor combinations
  • Ability to work a mixed schedule of mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends
  • Awareness of dietary restrictions, especially around celiac and gluten-free diets (this will not be the crux of what we are doing, but we will celebrate and make them available)
  • Alignment with our mission, culture and values

And one more thing:

The last 2 years have been no joke, emotionally, mentally, and physically. The hospitality and food service industries have taken a beating. Places closed left and right, folks left the industry in droves for a myriad of reasons, and the price of flour increased exponentially. The toll has been profound, and what the future holds is anyone’s guess. We do know that we need to do better; better in terms of work/life balance, better wages, and holding ourselves to a higher standard of empathy and kindness in the hopes of making the world of food and service one where people want to work and THRIVE. We don’t have a magic wand with all the answers, but we do firmly believe that we can collectively build something healthier and honest and transparent and real at Hearth.  Join us in making this happen!
