TITLE: BASE OPERATOR

REPORTS TO: BASE FOREMAN

JOB PURPOSE:

The purpose of this job is to operate a variety of heavy equipment, including, but not limited to, backhoe, motor grader, skid loader, dump truck, roller and mill equipment to remove or place materials per job specifications, and to compact material such as hot mix asphalt, cold mix asphalt, rock, sand, or operate other equipment needed on the job to support completion of road building projects

JOB DUTIES:

1. As directed by Supervisor, operate company roller or other equipment to complete daily job assignments in accordance with established operating procedures.

2. Daily inspection of the equipment in accordance with set guidelines to assure equipment can be safely operated.

3. Keep equipment clean and maintained.

4. Complete required forms daily, or as required, and submit completed forms to supervisor as needed.

5. To assist in other labor or truck work related areas as assigned.

6. Attends safety meetings as required.

7. Cooperates with supervisor/co-workers to achieve work assignments.

8. Drive defensively, courteously and cautiously at all times, following established safety guidelines.

· Stay in construction zone and avoid driving equipment into open traffic lanes.

· Watch traffic and pedestrian to make sure they are outside of the construction zone.

· Watch for co-worker’s and clear working path.

· Watch for overhead lines and other hazards.

· Watch ahead for deep ACC or fill material which could tip over roller, manholes, curb and gutter (especially new), avoid driveways, sidewalks or any other hard surface which roller could damage.

9. Interact with customers and the public in a courteous, helpful manner at all times.

· Reports customer/public problem situations immediately to their supervisor.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

1. Ability and skill to meet operating standards for roller and other equipment by maneuvering roller or equipment in/out of a variety of locations.

2. Ability/skill to perform operating duties for extended periods of time in a variety of weather conditions and maintain quality and productivity.

3. Ability and knowledge related to daily maintenance of assigned piece of equipment, such as fuel, oil, water, and other equipment parts.

4. Knowledge, skill and ability to follow supervisor’s instructions in an accurate manner, and in accordance with established procedures.

5. Ability to communicate effectively with customers, public and co-workers.

6. Ability to be available for work daily and overtime as required; including week-end work.

7. Ability to assist in laborer or other work related areas as required.

8. Ability to understand and observe safety rules/regulations, including preventive safety measures.

9. Ability to be alert to potential hazards in the work area.

10. Knowledge and ability to read and comprehend gauges on equipment in anticipation of maintenance or breakdown.

11. To take initiative in regards to what needs to be done next (looking ahead) and remain productive throughout the work day.

12. Ability/skill and responsibility to maintain control over traffic in a professional and safe manner.

13. Be aware and warn all roller operators of deep asphalt fills or soft edges with steep drop offs. Due to the possibility of tipping the roller over in these situations.

14. Have respect for other peoples property, treat it as your own or better. No debris, garbage, marks on the lawn (keep equipment off of lawn).

15. Lookout man for potential hazards such as:

· Overhead electrical lines, etc.

· Tree branches

· Pinch points of all kinds (equipment and vehicle to vehicle situation).

16. Ability/skill to properly load equipment on a variety of company trailers in a safe manner (both for employee safety and haul safety), and operate the loading and binding tools in the same manner.

BASIC PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This job involves strenuous physical work requiring frequent and sometimes continuous physical activity, and extended periods of time sitting while operating a vehicle over rough terrain.

KEY: Occasional = 1 to 33%

Frequently = 34 to 66%

Continuous = 67 to 100%

APPROXIMATE: 10 - 14 Hour Day

VISION: Good or corrected vision to normal range; ability to meet DOT standards.

HEARING: Good or corrected hearing to normal range to hear oral instructions, warnings, sound signals.

SITTING/DRIVING VEHICLE: Continuous

STANDING: Occasional

WALKING: Occasional

BEND/KNEEL/CROUCH: Occasional

REACHING ABOVE SHOULDER: Occasional

CLIMBING: Occasional

LIFTING: 1 TO 100 LBS.

PUSH/PULL/MENEUVER EQUIPMENT: Occasional

REPETITIVE MOTIONS:

1. Foot movements used to operate foot controls: Continuous

2. Hands used for using equipment and tools:

· Simple grasping (right & left) Continuous

· Firm grasping (right & left) Continuous

· Fine manipulating (right & left) Occasional

EXPOSURES:

May be exposed to the following:

Varying and seasonal weather conditions; dirt and dust; hazardous chemicals (such as asphalt, cement, gasoline, diesel, oil, paint, cure) and other varying chemicals; construction materials; and moving vehicles and heavy moving equipment.

WORK CONDITIONS:

This is an outdoor physical job working in:

Seasonal weather conditions; heavy equipment areas; wind; dirt; mud, etc.; driving company truck/vehicle.

SAFETY TRAINING:

Employees will be trained in the following areas:

Hazardous communication; Safety Manual; Lock Out Tag Out (as needed);

Respirators (as needed); Safety Meetings.

done on the job.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The qualifications are the ability to obtain and maintain a current Class A CDL and DOT certification, including entrance physical examination, drug and alcohol tests, and periodic recertification requirements.

Other qualifications would include the ability to do frequent and continuous physical labor and driving. A stable work history is preferred.

Knowledge of product and techniques.
