The Salvation Army Midland Division Corps located in Mattoon, Illinois, is looking for an Assistant Store Manager! This is a part-time position with starting pay of $13.00 per hour. This position offers generous paid time off policy which includes sick time, vacation time, and personal time. 14 paid holidays a year. Participation in the company funded pension plan after one year of service. Part-time employees are eligible to participate in Group Voluntary Life (based on age and smoking status).

Job Objective

This position is expected to advance and support the Mission of The Salvation Army. Assists Manager with thrift store operation by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate staff.  This position is expected to perform all functions of a thrift store worker.  This includes but is not limited to: Working with customers; lifting and carrying donated/purchased items; clothes sorting/baling operations; stocking, pricing and placing items for sale; making change for purchased items; etc.  The majority of the work done in the position will be of the physical labor type.  Position is expected to comply with and meet The Salvation Army, Federal, State and Local policies and standards.

  • Assist in scheduling store workers to ensure coverage in store at all times scheduled to be open.
  • Assist in supervising employees and volunteers in performance of duties to ensure compliance with directives and guidelines.
  • Assist in providing training of new personnel.
  • Bank cash receipts at end of business day. Safeguard cash at all times.
  • Attend meetings as required and keep personnel informed of new policies and directives.
  • Maintain good customer relations, as is expected by all staff and volunteers.
  • Assist in ordering merchandise and maintain accurate inventory of goods on hand.
  • Report safety hazards. Responsible for the protection of personnel, property, and building.
  • Maintain confidentiality for all aspects of store operations.
  • Sort donated items.
  • Price donated items.
  • Place donated items on racks/shelves for display.
  • Perform clothes baling operations if applicable (operate bailer, move/stack bales which weigh up to 150 pounds).
  • Perform clerk/cashier activities.
  • Maintain confidential and comply with Safe From Harm guidelines.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relationships with clients, co-workers and supervisors. This includes, but is not limited to, such actions as: resolution of conflicts in a professional manner; courteous treatment of staff, visitors and clients; respect of others property and person; and professional and appropriate communication to and about clients, co-workers and supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent and one year related work experience.  Combination of education and experience will be considered.  Supervising retail sales and cash register experience are a plus.  Position requires good communications with customers and other employees.  Appropriate valid drivers license and pass TSA MVR check.  To perform this job successfully, and individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Must be a team player, a self starter, a good motivator of others, and perform well with minimal supervision.
