Position Summary
The Environmental Scientist possess a strong knowledge of natural resources and regulatory framework of the State of Florida and leads a natural resource team through permitting projects. The ES works with clients, contractors and local government officials offering valuable contributions from conceptualization and design phases through the regulatory review process, bidding, and construction.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Conducting site inspections as part of environmental assessments and compliance audits.
- Supporting geotechnical field work / analysis including soil boring logging, sampling, and testing.
- Oversight of subcontractors and vendors performing drilling, laboratory analytical services, mowing, clearing, maintenance, and excavation activities.
- Supporting ecological field efforts including threatened, endangered, and sensitive species assessment and wetlands assessment and delineation.
- Preparation of proposals, cost estimates, plans, technical specifications, including day-to-day client and stakeholder correspondence.
- Perform statistical analysis of complex data sets and prepare technical reports.
- Review and interpret environmental data and analytical laboratory results.
- Prepare field reports, internal / external correspondence, and technical reports.
- Soil boring and monitoring well installation.
- Soil, sediment, surface water, and groundwater screening and sampling.
- Storm water, wastewater and influent/effluent process water sampling.
- Operation, maintenance, and monitoring of remediation systems.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge in water resources, ecology, biology, or other environmental sciences.
- Strong knowledge of the regulatory framework of the below governing agencies:
- State of Florida’s water management districts
- Florida Department of Environmental Protection
- Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission
- US Army Corps of Engineers
- US Environmental Protection Agency
- US Fish and Wildlife Service
- Team management skills to assist with leading and mentoring junior and mid-level staff.
- Developing project, scheduling, and budgeting for new project work independently.
- Solid technical writing and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate in a team environment.
- Experience in field work, wetland delineation and list species survey techniques.
- Ability and willingness to learn and follow precise protocols for field data collection.
- Experience preparing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents, including but not limited to: Categorical Exclusions (CATEX), Environmental Assessments (EA) and/or Environmental Impact Statements (EIS).
- Knowledge of ArcGIS or/and AutoCAD.
- Must be able to travel locally and out of area when necessary.
Qualifications
- B.S. or B.A degree in civil or environmental engineering, environmental science, ecology, biology, oceanography, geography, or similar science or engineering field.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in one or more of the following areas: Environmental Planning, Threatened and Endangered Species Consultation, or Environmental Permitting and Reporting.
- One year of fieldwork experience.
- A valid Florida Driver's license is required, and a clean driving record must be maintained.
Physical Demands
- Ability to perform field work and work in the field in various types of weather, lift 40 pounds (including loaded coolers, soil corers, and other equipment) and walk or hike through rough and uneven terrain, woodlands, thick vegetation, water, and on slopes while carrying supplies.
