The Director of Development (DoD) joins a dynamic, high-energy team of fundraising professionals focused on attracting and deepening Heluna Health’s engagement with new and existing donors committed to healthy, strong communities for all. The DoD is responsible for implementing an ambitious advancement road map aligned with the agency’s strategic plan and designed to expand and diversify the organization’s philanthropic base of support. The DoD will devise and execute effective solicitation strategies to maximize comprehensive private gift support from individuals, foundations, corporations, and other philanthropic partners who want to advance innovative strategies to protect and enhance population health.
The DoD will be responsible for the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospective donors at all gift levels. The successful candidate will work closely with the Chief Advancement Officer to facilitate prospect management processes, including the creation and execution of major gift cultivation and solicitation strategies involving the CEO and members of the Board of Directors. In the area of annual giving, the DoD will provide leadership to the Heluna Health Community Fund by formulating and implementing effective goals, strategies, and campaigns to secure new and increased gifts. Additionally, the DoD will develop and implement a first-ever planned giving program to secure deferred gifts (i.e., bequests, annuities and trusts) in support of health equity for all. The DoD will track and evaluate fundraising staff performance to ensure that established goals are achieved.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Development is responsible for a wide range of fundraising activities including but not limited to:
- Assisting the Chief Advancement Officer in formulation of effective goals, objectives, strategies, activities, and benchmarks for a comprehensive fundraising program to expand and diversify the agency’s philanthropic base of support;
- Personally manage a portfolio of ~75 donor prospects (individuals, foundations, corporations) with responsibility for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of these assigned relationships;
- Effectively articulate the case for support so that new and existing donors understand and connect to the mission, vision, values, and goals of Heluna Health;
- Securing outright gifts (i.e., cash, stocks, real estate, gifts-in-kind) as well as deferred gifts (i.e., bequests, gift annuities, charitable trusts, life insurance) in support of the highest priority funding needs identified by the Board of Directors, CEO, and senior management;
- Participating in all aspects of the gift cycle: (1) initiate contacts with potential donors, (2) develop appropriate cultivation strategies which may include active involvement of key volunteers and senior agency leadership, (3) move potential donors in an appropriate and timely fashion toward solicitation and closure, (4) prepare compelling solicitation materials, and (5) establish and maintain quality stewardship for donors;
- Drafting proposals, letters of inquiry, reports and other communication material for institutional donors including foundations and corporations;
- Working with the Sr. Development Manager to encourage new and increased gifts from a variety of constituencies to the Heluna Health Community Fund;
- Working with the Chief Advancement Officer and outside experts, develop and implement a first-ever planned giving program, and maintain knowledge of planned giving options, opportunities, and applicable laws;
- Maintaining gift acknowledgment process to ensure accurate and timely recording of gifts and distribution of receipts to donors;
- Implementing processes to monitor and track fundraising progress, and reports these to various audiences;
- Supervising, providing leadership and setting accountable goals for Development staff. Initially manage Prospect Management Coordinator and Sr. Development Manager with expectation of continued staff growth as fundraising goals are achieved; and
- Traveling around the region and to other areas of the country.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Previous Experience: The candidate should have a broad development background (minimum 7 years) with a proven record of securing impactful philanthropic gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations. Must be a determined professional with significant experience building successful relationships and meeting established fundraising goals and objectives.
Knowledge and Education: The candidate must possess exceptional written and oral communication skills specifically geared towards fundraising including proposals, solicitations, case statements, digital campaigns, and gift acknowledgment letters. Strong organizational and administrative skills, with a demonstrated track record of establishing effective systems that foster collaboration and improve efficiency. Effective interpersonal skills, keen attention to detail, and a creative and positive attitude. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments with minimum supervision while meeting strict deadlines with an outcomes-oriented approach. Must be able to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and advance strategic advancement plans. Knowledge of prospect management tools and Salesforce donor database is a must. A Bachelor’s degree is required, a Master’s degree preferred.
