General Statement of Duties

Assists the Deputy County Attorney and the County Attorney in providing general legal services for the County School administration and all other boards, commissions, authorities and agencies of the County; does related work as required.


Essential Duties


The Henrico County Attorney’s Office is seeking to hire a full-time attorney to join our education law team! This position works closely with two other attorneys as legal counsel to Henrico County’s world class public school system and offers the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of over 50,000 students and dedicated education professionals across 72 schools.

A successful applicant may expect to advise central office leadership and individual school administrators regarding a wide variety of legal issues related to employment matters, student matters, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, court rulings, and regulations, providing legal review and assistance with FOIA requests, and drafting and reviewing agreements/contracts. In addition, the position will assist the education law team in providing proactive legal advice and trainings to leadership and administrators on all matters affecting the operation of the school system. This position may also assist with employee grievance hearings or special education due process hearings. This position offers a challenging, fast-paced and varied practice on a wide range of legal issues while working with highly educated clients.

Applicants should have a strong academic background and excellent research and writing skills. The ideal candidate will have excellent advocacy skills; ability to organize, interpret and apply legal principles and knowledge to complex legal problems; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, public officials and the general public; and good professional judgment.

Minimum Qualifications


Graduation from an accredited school of law; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.


Additional Information


The successful applicant will work in the school district’s Central Office, located at the Eastern Government Center on Nine Mile Road, with occasional flexibility to work remotely.

Must be licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia, hold a Juris Doctor degree and be a member of the Virginia State Bar.

At least four years of experience in the practice of law is preferred.

Experience in education law, including but not limited to
, student civil rights, student discipline, custody and parent rights; FERPA, special education and disability law is highly preferred. Alternatively, a strong candidate may have extensive professional legal experience, including for example employment law experience or experience in local government/municipal work plus an interest in education law and willingness to learn.

This position will be filled at the Assistant County Attorney I, II, III, or Senior level depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate and the needs of the department at the time of hire.

Salary will be commensurate with experience.
