Position Description:

  • The General Superintendent’s (GS) role is primarily to act in support and oversight of the Project Superintendent by focusing on long range project scheduling and planning and identifying and analyzing course corrections when necessary.


Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Environmental Safety, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
  • 8-10 years of construction operations management experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • OSHA 30 Certified.
  • CPR & First Aid Certified.
  • Must be computer literate and proficient in MS Office skills including Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Possess the passion for construction necessary to generate a consistent positive work environment and foster collaborative teams with varying styles and backgrounds. Must be able to work independently and with other team members.
  • Solid problem-solving skills and ability to exhibit consistent and competent judgement.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High attention to detail while working under deadlines and managing multiple priorities.
  • Must possess the ability to strategically allocate resources and effectively manage assets.
  • Must possess technical understandings of architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing disciplines.
  • Experienced in construction layout, blueprint, and shop drawing reading.
  • Proven management capabilities having demonstrated the ability to delegate tasks and motivate direct reports.
  • Strong understanding of financial metrics and key performance indicators.
  • Extensive experience overseeing and implementing safety programs. Must understand and be able to lead construction specific safety initiatives.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of ProjectSight Construction Management Software, preferred.
  • Scheduling software experience, preferred.


Essential Duties:

  • The General Superintendent (GS) acts as a resource by mentoring, training, and developing personnel and craft in all aspects of their careers.
  • The GS assists the Operations Managers with decisions about the type and quantity of resources needed to manage and supervise a project.
  • Responsible for reviewing the Book of 14 and helps to perform Quality Control Audits. Review of these tools helps the GS stay in touch with the staff, communicate expectations, offer observations, and provide ideas to help the team manage the project effectively.
  • Evaluation of promotions, pay increases, bonuses and S-Unit distribution is the joint responsibility of the GS and Operations Manager.
  • Develops strong and collaborative relationships with Hensel Phelps’ owners and clients, thereby helping to resolve issues on projects and to understand potential future opportunities.
  • Accountable for guiding the District and the Company policies related to core employees, craft benefits, craft development, safety, quality control, etc. through the GS Roundtable and other forums. The GS makes decisions on how and where the Company’s craft workforce will be used and assigned.
  • As needed, assists in procurement and preconstruction efforts by reviewing constructability, quality, and schedule considerations. This includes assisting with the bids in terms of our self-work to see if the project will fit in with the current workload of our craft workforce by developing the WH/unit, schedule, durations, etc.

Salaried positions (project engineers and above) participate in an annual bonus plan, subject to company and employee performance. Salaried employees (this is all salaried employees) are also eligible for a company cell phone or cell phone allowance in accordance with company policy. Further, salaried employees (project engineers and above) also receive either a vehicle or vehicle allowance in accordance with Hensel Phelps’ policies.
