Herzog Railroad Services, Inc. is currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer to join our growing Research & Development team in St. Joseph, MO. We are looking for someone who loves working on exciting projects, who isn’t afraid to solve new problems, and is ready to change the railroad industry.
Duties and Responsibilities:
*This is a non-exhaustive overview of the job duties for this position.
- The designer will work closely with engineers and project managers to create and modify mechanical drawings for railroad maintenance-of-way equipment.
- Prepares mechanical drawings for parts, weldments and assemblies.
- Creates 3D models and assemblies to be used to create research & development projects. Make drawing packages for bid solicitation.
- Adheres to established CAD standards and best practices for efficiency and achievability.
- Develops design solutions for unique design challenges.
- Applies knowledge of materials and their suitability for a specific application.
- Works with other disciplines to coordinate deliverables and schedules.
- Provides technical solutions to complex and/or unique problems, which require the regular use of ingenuity, creativity, and independence. Solutions are frequently original and impact the outcome of the entire project. Usually includes some responsibility for coordination and participation in developing the final product.
- Evaluates potential design changes to eliminate future problems. Incorporates lessons learned into standard details and practices.
- Must know how to read a tape measure, calipers, and other inspection tools.
- Occasional travel, up to 10%.
- Regular and consistent engagement, participation and promotion of Herzog’s Culture and its essential behaviors are a requirement for this position.
- Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are a requirement for this position.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Five or more years of Computer Aided Drafting/3D Modeling experience.
- Highly proficient with Autodesk Inventor preferred.
- Experience with Autodesk Vault, AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, 3DS Max, and Automation Studio is a plus.
- Competent in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc).
- Possess a basic understanding of electrical and hydraulic schematics and circuits.
- Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be a great team player.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
- Pass and maintain e-RAILSAFE pre-employment background check and safety certification.
- Subject to motor vehicle report review.
- Maintain valid driver’s license and endorsements as required per position.
- Pass pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety sensitive nature of this position.
- Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.
Physical Requirements:

- Perform light work, occasionally exerting up to 20 pounds of force.
- Able to walk on uneven surfaces.
- Occasionally ascend/descend step ladders and/or stairs.
- Regularly sit and stand for an extended period of time.
- Regularly kneel, bend, and squat.
- Must successfully pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
- Must be able to hear and distinguish auditory signals.
- Able to work in conditions with loud noise; work on/around heavy/moving machinery.
- Able to work outdoors in all weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet).
