Job Role Summary
This position is responsible for guiding and promoting evidence-based healthcare in a patient-centric manner to improve quality outcomes and equity within health care organizations and the community. The specialist acts to reduce unnecessary healthcare services, avoidable expenses, and health disparities attributable to limited health literacy. This position will provide training and continued education opportunities for Community Health Workers from designated Community Based Organizations on the Teach Back Method and Shared Decision Making Models. The specialist will also assist the Advancing Health Literacy Community Health Workers in developing appropriate COVID-19 health education presentations.
Qualifications
Completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health Promotion or similar field
Certified Health Education Specialist certification (CHES) preferred
Experience in a health care environment and knowledge of Indianapolis’ health care organizations is strongly preferred.
Work effectively/provide leadership in complex, stressful situations
Proven success in public speaking and understanding of adult education principles and techniques
Ability to analyze data and other information to evaluate programs and to determine the needs of the people served
Participates in ongoing professional development necessary to maintain awareness of relevant health literacy research and best practices
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Basic understanding of the program planning process.
Community health education philosophy, methodologies, principles, practices with the ability to apply this knowledge in the community organization process.
Understanding of adult learning principles, learning theory, and human relations.
Ability to:
assess individuals and groups for level of literacy and for culturally specific needs.
assess the impact of health education activities and modify them accordingly.
Cognitive ability to read and interpret general health education materials, policies, and procedures.
Ability to speak effectively before small groups of citizens or employees.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Must be a good listener and be culturally sensitive to respond to the needs of the people they serve.
Ability to think creatively regarding how to improve the health of audiences through health education programs.
Work effectively/provide leadership in complex, stressful situations
Deductive reasoning, professional judgment, and accept responsibility for decisions.
Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Working Enviornment
Primarily office environment; class instruction and/or outreach activities in varied public sites throughout the county.
Physical demands include lifting medium weight materials on a routine basis.
