Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- A Nurse Practitioner has many specific responsibilities that make it somewhat difficult to “lump” together under major headings and assign percentages to them. The majority of time by far is in conjunction with direct patient care as all but 3 hours (sometimes less) of a 40-hour week is spent seeing patients. Occasionally there is time away from the clinic to attend trainings and workshops or a committee assignment in line with the needs of the clinic.
- We function in a very autonomous setting here at BFC because of the guidelines and protocols we have. One needs to be comfortable with their ability and clinical experience in order to be comfortable in working here.
- All Bell Flower Nurse Practitioners can work relatively autonomously, using standard client protocols. Bell Flower NPs see female patients, provide pelvic exams, collect specimens, including Pap smears if BFC is providing them, assess family planning and contraception usage and diagnose and treat according to standard STD clinic protocols. Some NP’s have prescription privileges and can write prescriptions under standing orders. Nurse Practitioners at BFC also provide examination, collect specimens and assess contraceptive usage for men. They also diagnosis and treat male patients.
