About us

Since opening in 1982, HIGH DESERT MUSEUM has brought together wildlife, culture, art and natural resources to promote an understanding of the natural and cultural heritage of North America’s High Desert country. We do so through indoor and outdoor exhibits, wildlife in natural habitats, living history demonstrations and dynamic programs on a beautiful, 135-acre campus in the pine forest. The Museum is a nonprofit organization accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, is a Smithsonian Affiliate, was the 2019 recipient of the Western Museums Association’s Charles Redd Award for Exhibition Excellence and was awarded the 2021 National Medal for Museum and Library Services. During the 2018-19 fiscal year, 195,000 visitors enjoyed the Museum.

The Museum is located in Bend, Oregon, a fast-growing, charismatic city nestled against the Cascade Range at the edge of the High Desert. We strive to be inclusive, culturally humble, relevant, curious, and mindful. As a team, we work together to wildly excite and responsibly teach, creating connection to and dialogue about the High Desert.

About this job and what you’ll do

The Forest Manager is responsible for forest-fire fuels reduction and promoting the health and resilience of the museum’s forested areas. This work is funded in part by a grant from the Oregon Department of Forestry. The Forest Manager will spend most of their time outdoors completing grant project initiatives including thinning trees, pruning branches, mowing ground fuels, removing pine needles, and replanting native species. The position will end in June 2023; however, extension is possible depending on the availability of future funding. In addition to the hourly compensation and full-time benefits, a $5,000 bonus will be paid upon completion of the project objectives.

About who you are

The Forest Manager is someone who enjoys getting out in the forest and putting in a day of physical labor. You are as comfortable wielding a chainsaw as you are riding a mower. You have experience with forest maintenance or landscaping, park maintenance, construction, or horticulture. This project has clearly defined, time sensitive objectives and you are able to prioritize and plan your schedule to accomplish them. You’ll have the support of a team, but you are comfortable tackling this project on your own and using your judgment to overcome challenges.
