Assistant Teacher Job Description

Hilltop Learning Center is a non-profit, faith-based mission of the Malvern United Methodist Church. This position is primarily responsible for assisting the lead teachers in their classrooms: observing, monitoring and supervising the children, helping to implement the lesson plans and any duties needed to allow the classroom to run smoothly. The teacher will work with and report to the Hilltop Learning Center director. All rules from the Employee Manual and state licensing rules should be followed, including maintaining a friendly, professional attitude at all times.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 18 years old
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED

  • Keeps all information about the children and their families confidential

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Greet and acknowledge all children and their caregiver as they drop off or pick up their child.
  • Maintain appropriate communication with staff, children, and families at all times. Maintain an open, warm and professional relationship with all families. If the lead teacher has left or is absent, complete the daily communication log for each child.
  • Assist in planning and implementing the daily program under the guidance of the lead teacher in the classroom as needed. Assist with escorting children to the restroom, filling in for breaks, or any other jobs for the teacher or children.
  • Assist in planning and preparing the childcare environment, such as preparing materials/supplies, relevant bulletin board, and classroom decorations.
  • Relieve the lead teacher when necessary if/when she needs to perform her required duties, such as child assessments.
  • Assist teacher in any emergency (disaster/fire/tornado etc) situation.
  • If working with young children and infants, provide care such as changing diapers, feeding and providing a safe, clean and nurturing environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality of the children and families.
  • Supervision: All employees should work together to maintain an orderly physical environment along with providing stimulating experiences for the children. Children should never be alone (except school age) and should be supervised at all times.
  • Playground: No two staff members should be together on the playground unless actively playing with the children. Interact with the children during their playtime. No one should be sitting!
  • Interact with children at all times: mealtimes, rest periods, diapering/restroom times, playtimes, and activity times. Children should never be left alone for any reason.
  • Help to ensure the safety and welfare of the children and protect each from physical or emotional harm. Maintain safety compliance rules in the classroom. Offer first aid to children when needed and deal with minor injuries.
  • Recognize, manage and guide inappropriate behavior and correct according to licensing regulations.
  • Cleaning, sanitizing and housekeeping duties are integral to a smooth-running classroom.
  • Wash tables, sweep floor in classroom, hallway and restrooms, throw away trash, assure plugs are in all electrical sockets, sanitize toys biweekly (infants need toys sanitized whenever the toy is put in his/her mouth), remove or repair any items that could pose a threat to the children.
  • Maintain all routine record keeping, such as attendance rosters and recording meals as required. Complete incident reports immediately and have them signed by the parent/guardian.
  • Report any suspected case of child abuse to ODJFS (330-627-2571) as required by law.
  • Attend all staff meetings – they are mandatory.
  • Complete the required courses within the first year of employment and renew as often as required.
  • Additional requirements can be added to the job description as needed.

When difficulties arise, please try to state differences openly and kindly. Look at your own behavior as well as the other employee’s. If you have a problem with another staff member that you cannot resolve, see the director.
