MUSEUM RECEPTIONIST - AFRICATOWN HERITAGE HOUSE
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Africatown Heritage House, home of the nationally-anticipated Clotilda: The Exhibition, is opening early July 2023. Operated by the History Museum of Mobile, this site will welcome visitors from near and far to learn the story of the 110 men, women, and children aboard America's last slave ship - and of the remarkable community of Africatown they created. Located in the heart of historic Africatown, the Heritage House is to be an integral part of preserving the community's history and partnering for the community's future.
The Museum Receptionist is responsible for welcoming visitors and offering friendly and courteous assistance regarding the museum, its exhibits, services, and programs. This is a high profile position that sets the initial tone for each guest’s experience and perception of the museum. You'll meet locals and tourists as you invite them to explore this important history.

This is a full time position, Tuesday to Saturday 8:30-5:00.
This position is expected to be filled in early June.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
This position provides a wide range of visitor, cashier, and clerical services including, but not limited, to:
- Responsible for receiving Museum guests and overseeing the Museum’s admissions desk.
- Provide orientation to visitors and information regarding self-guided tours, admission fees, operating hours, programs, and other basic Museum services.
- Direct visitor flow in Museum and provide access to professional staff as needed.
- Answer multi-line telephone and routes calls or takes messages as necessary.
- Maintain an accurate listing of staff members, their phone numbers, position titles, departments, and specific areas of responsibility.
- Receive, record, and secure all revenues received from admission fees, merchandise sales, tours, and ticketed events.
- Accurately account for all monies received on the appropriate forms and reconcile visitation and revenues on a daily basis with the Museum’s Business Manager.
- Monitor galleries and public areas for inappropriate behavior and report safety or security concerns to the Museum’s Facilities Manager in a discreet and timely manner.
- Assist with light housekeeping and cleaning of the reception area.

Africatown Heritage House Manager.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, with associated reading, writing, and speaking skills. One or more years of work experience with the public performing sales, clerical, and cash handling duties.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of telephone etiquette and basic office procedures and practices.
- Basic computer skills.
- Careful attention to detail.
- Knowledge of Museum facilities, exhibits, and services.
- A strong work ethic and a positive, outgoing, and friendly personality.
- Ability to deal effectively and pleasantly with Museum visitors and staff members.
- Ability to interpret and explain Museum programs, policies, and activities in a clear, concise, and unfailingly courteous manner.
- Ability to identify visitor needs and take the initiative to correct, remedy, or improve the guest experience.
- Ability to work weekends.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
General reception desk and office environment. This position involves sitting for long periods of time. Walking, standing, bending, twisting, and occasional lifting is required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand and wrist motion is also necessary.
