Dear Prospective Educator,
Hodis Learning & Music is looking for kind and experienced independent contractors, ‘Educators’, to serve our growing client base and become a part of the HLM family.
Subjects, Populations, and Additional Considerations:
We are looking for Educators who can tutor and teach the following subjects:
- Accordion
- Music Theory
- Aural Training
- Improvisation
As we value diverse expertise and tutoring abilities, priority will be given to those who can also tutor and teach additional subjects/instruments.
Educators must be able and willing to tutor and teach the subjects at the elementary, middle school, and high school levels. Priority will be given to those who can also tutor and teach at the college level.
Locations:
- HLM primarily and proudly serves South Pasadena, Pasadena, San Marino, Alhambra, Temple City, Eagle Rock, and Highland Park.
- Educators conduct sessions in the students’ home. Some students may wish to conduct sessions via Zoom, but these students are a rarity (about 1-2% of our clientele).

- The company was founded by an experienced South Pasadena tutor and music teacher as he witnessed a growing need for kind and experienced Educators during the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine.
Description of Role and Responsibilities:
- Hodis Learning & Music Educators are experienced in more than one area of study. They tutor academics, teach music lessons, and/or teach the arts: visual arts and non-music performing arts.
- Educators communicate with families to schedule sessions.
- Although we require Educators to commit to 4 hours/week, hours may be minimal to begin with. Educators will be given more hours as time goes on and will have the option to take on more than 4 hours.
Qualifications:
- A desire to help students achieve and succeed in their academic or artistic pursuits. Kindness and understanding and a positive, warm, and uplifting personality to help HLM students shine brighter in their academics, Music, or Arts, and beyond.
- Ability and desire to work with students of all ages. Our youngest students are about 5 years of age.
- At least a bachelor’s degree and 2 years of tutoring/instruction experience. Preference is given to applicants who also scored at least 1400 on the SAT (2100 on the old test) or SAT-equivalent.
- Local to the greater Pasadena area.
- Ability to reliably commute to students’ homes throughout the San Gabriel Valley- primarily South Pasadena, Pasadena, Alhambra, and San Marino, and secondarily in Temple City, Arcadia, Eagle Rock, and Highland Park,
- Academic Educators must be able to tutor multiple subjects.
- Fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Willing and able to wear a mask while teaching.
- Ability to commit to at least 4 hours/week.
- Ability to commit to a six-month contract. Performance will be assessed at the end of the six months before consideration of contract renewal.

- HLM handles all billing matters and pays Educators biweekly.
- Conflict resolution and client reassignment should issues arise.
- In the next couple of years, we will be hiring a dedicated scheduler to take over all scheduling responsibilities for HLM and its Educators.
Pay:
- $37.00 for 60-minute sessions
- $28.50 for 45-minute sessions
- $20.00 for 30-minute sessions
Our Thorough and Unique Interview Process:
- (1) Send your resume, college transcript(s), and standardized test scores. Applications that are missing resumes, transcripts, and/or standardized test scores will be given lower priority.
- (2) 25-minute Informal interview.
- (3) 20-minute mock session immediately following the interview.
- (4) First session with an HLM client observed by a company administrator.
- If you pass steps 1-4, then we proceed to signing a contract.

COVID-19 considerations:
All Educators must be vaccinated. Educators may conduct sessions maskless with the parent's and student's permission. Otherwise, Educators must wear masks during sessions. You have the right to decline services if students refuse to wear masks.
Application Question(s):
- Are you vaccinated and willing to submit proof of vaccination? And are you willing to wear masks at all times around students who prefer masked sessions?
- This position requires music teachers to drive from home to home to provide in-person sessions. A small minority of sessions will be conducted online. As such, this position requires that the candidate has access to a personal vehicle and lives in or close to South Pasadena. Do you have reliable transportation and do you live within a 15-minute drive from South Pasadena?
- What is the youngest age student you feel comfortable teaching? Do you have experience working with this age?
- Do you have experience teaching music to neurodivergent students (students with autism, ADHD, specific learning disorders, or any other developmental differences)?
- What is your general availability for teaching?
- Do you teach accordion? What other instruments do you teach, if any?
- This position begins with very few hours and is best suited for those who already work in the area. We only have 1 student who is looking for accordion instruction. Would this work for you?
