Job Summary:
The Director of Medical Social Services directs and oversees trauma-informed and medically related social services of the Kosair for Kids Complex Care Center at the direction of the Senior Vice President / Administrator, in collaboration with departmental leadership, physicians, and the Interdisciplinary Team. The Director of Medical Social Services provides leadership, guidance, and support, partnering with residents, responsible parties, and families to ensure residents achieve and sustain their highest practicable emotional and psychosocial well-being and quality of life. Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • This position directly supervises the Medical Social Services Coordinator, Resident Transition Specialist, and Eligibility Specialist
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Direct and oversee the provision of medically related social services that support and engage residents and their families with compassion and professionalism providing multi-faceted leadership, support, and service, focusing on meeting the psychosocial, emotional, and spiritual needs of parents and guardians as they navigate the healthcare continuum.
  • Oversee and provide case management to help residents and/or their parents or guardians address and resolve the psychosocial and emotional problems related to their child or young adult’s health condition as outlined in individualized comprehensive care plans.
  • Lead and collaborate with social services team members in identifying and seeking ways to support residents’ individual needs through the assessment and care planning process.
  • Advocate for and assist residents and their parents or guardians in the assertion of their rights within the facility and voicing and resolving grievances.
  • Oversee the arrangement of internal and external supports, services, and resources, during the resident’s stay in the facility and transitions, making referrals as needed to obtain needed services in a language the resident and/or family understands.
  • Oversee and provide financial resource management for residents and residents’ responsible parties assisting them in the maintenance of residents’ funds and financial documents, ensuring long-term care facility eligibility, and acting on behalf of the residents’ responsible party as representative payee when needed.
  • Oversee, evaluate, and ensure regulatory compliance of medically related social services and protocols focusing on Identifying and seeking ways to support residents’ individual needs through the assessment and care planning process.
  • Assist residents and/or their parents or guardians with advance care planning, including but not limited to completion of advance directives, resuscitation limitations, and making referrals for palliative and end-of-life care as needed.
  • Recruit, lead, mentor, and support a team of highly motivated professionals to seek and ensure innovation, collaboration, and quality, evaluating the job performance of direct reports.
  • Provide education and training pertaining to residents’ social, emotional, spiritual, and psychosocial needs, and resident rights, interpreting regulations and facility standards for all facility stakeholders in conjunction with KCC Training and Development Department.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee Medical Social Services Department financial objectives collaboratively with departmental leadership to meet fiscal targets.
  • Treat and ensure residents, families, team members, and visitors are treated fairly, with respect, and confidentiality, regarding all aspects of individual diversity, and inclusion to ensure they are free from abuse, neglect, and maltreatment, reporting concerns immediately, and participating in investigations as needed.
  • Provide values-led and trauma-informed leadership, creating an inclusive and restorative culture for all stakeholders embracing all aspects of individual diversity, and demonstrating a continual commitment to non-violence, open communication, emotional intelligence, social learning, democracy, social responsibility, growth and change, and racial healing.

  • Maintain continual professional licensure and keep abreast of changes in the field of long-term care and medical social work participating in external educational opportunities, maintaining continuing education requirements, and leading team member development related to social services in collaboration with Training and Development.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficient with current Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a bachelor’s degree in a human services field including, but not limited to, sociology, special education, rehabilitation counseling, and psychology is required. Master of Social Work Degree is preferred.
  • Minimum one year of supervised social work experience in a health care setting working directly with individuals is required.
  • Current CPR/Basic Life Support for the healthcare provider certification is required and provided.
Physical Requirements:
  • May be mentally and emotionally demanding.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and computer workstation.
  • Extended work hours and 24-hour availability.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move and/or lift a minimum of 35 lbs. up to 65 lbs. unassisted, from the floor using proper body mechanics.
  • Subject to frequent interruptions and frequent movement throughout the day.
  • Must be able to read, write, and communicate in the English language.
  • Must be able to physically attend and participate in continuing education and training on-site, off-site, in the community, and out of state.
