GROCERY MANAGER
PURPOSE STATEMENT: To manage the grocery department to achieve maximum sales and profit while maintaining optimum store conditions.
SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To greet customers, respond to customer questions/requests/complaints and explain store policies in a courteous manner.
- To make recommendations regarding the hiring, firing, discipline, promotion and evaluation of all grocery department personnel.
- To orient/train all new grocery department employees and retrain employees when necessary.
- To develop a weekly labor schedule in a timely basis, for all grocery department employees for approval by the store manager.
- To implement the weekly display plan for end-aisle merchandising and ad promotion.
- To supervise/order all grocery products and supplies so as to minimize out-of-stocks while maintaining the desired grocery inventory turns.
- To supervise/perform: 1) preparation of the backroom for receipt of merchandise; 2) checking of the load for shortage/overage; 3) sorting of cases according to aisle or pallet for stocking; 4) stocking of merchandise on shelf; 5) building of displays; 6) storage of back stock.
- To supervise/perform: 1) cleaning of store floors, check lanes, carts, restrooms, parking lot and shelves; 2) safe use of cleaning equipment and chemicals.
- To supervise/perform: 1) loading of stocking carts/pallets; 2) transportation of cases to the sales floor either on stocking carts or pallets; 3) matching of the case strip to the shelf tag/stock; 4) placement of merchandise in the designated shelf/display position/area; 5) the "face/front" program for the front row of each display; 6) the immediate pick up/removal of all broken containers, packing materials/boxes from the sales floor or customers pathway.
- To supervise/perform the safety procedures used in the operation of the baler, case cutter, pallet jack and forklift, and floor-cleaning equipment.
- To supervise/perform the counting and recording of individual items of merchandise for inventory.
- To supervise/perform the manual price-marking/labeling of merchandise without a UPC code.
- To supervise the movement of damaged/unsalable and "returnable" products from shelves to the backroom, sorting of the materials into bins and the return of damage to the reclaim center.
- To supervise/perform the changing of signs, light bulbs, tags and price markers.
- To perform miscellaneous tasks assigned by the store manager, substituting for absent workers and performing any additional tasks necessary to provide products and service to customers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Able to give/receive complex verbal instructions/descriptions to/from supervisors/co-workers/employees concerning store/department policy/procedures and use of equipment.
- Work and educational history demonstrating stability.
- The ability to read and write English. Able to read instructions, merchandise labels, warehouse order codes, numbers, reports, printed paper and forms.
- Make judgments concerning: the placement of merchandise on the shelf/display, pricing, employee scheduling, ordering of product/supplies, department conditions, hiring/supervision of employees, merchandising plans, departments operational policies and procedures and the sales/promotion of merchandise.
- Good interpersonal communications.
PREFERRED:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior Grocery Department experience.
- Prior supervisory experience.
TASKS OF THE JOB This position generally involves:
- Mobility:
- Move while conducting training and orientation of Grocery Department personnel, approximately 75 yards.
- Move to supervise: the receiving of product, movement of product to the floor or storage area, opening/cutting of cases, inspect product quality, sorting of cases/merchandise, building of displays on the shelf and at end-aisles, the allocation of space in grocery categories, order merchandise and supplies, cleaning and maintenance, removal of trash/debris from the department, price-marking and signage throughout the store, approximate maximum 100 yards.
- Work on tile or concrete for a maximum of 8 hours in duration.
- The Grocery Manager will perform the same tasks of the job as the food clerk/stocker while substituting as part of the work crew or as part of the training program for new employees. (See Food Clerk/Stocker Job Description.)
- Twist at the waist while cleaning, cutting/opening, sorting, loading/unloading, moving/removing merchandise and stocking merchandise.
- Perceive cases, case-cutter edge, case strips, shelf location, product size/description/quality, customers, shelf tags, labels on products, stocking carts, knives, department production equipment, cooler layout, packaging materials, debris on floor, aisle markers, and signs.
- Perceive color difference on product and product labels.
- Communicate with and respond to customers, co-workers and vendors.
- Respond to the sound of baler/pallet jack/forklift/cleaning-equipment operation.
- Use and respond to the intercom/phone system.
- Read case labels/case strips, signs, tags, equipment and chemical-warning labels, shelf signs, numbers and aisle markers, reports and operational forms.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Inside and outside work with extreme variations in heat/cold/dust/humidity from entrance/back door/compressors/cooler/freezer.
