Job Description



Location: Washington D.C. (Onsite-No Relocation is Provided)

Security Clearance:

Must be a US Citizen eligible for a DoD Secret Clearance.

Job Summary:

The Environmental Health Scientist will support CMO medical direction and oversight of CBP workplace health support efforts and provide expert guidance/support to the CBP SOMO on workforce health related environmental issues, policies, and programs.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Assist and support the SOMO with workplace health protection of CBP

  • Work collaboratively with the Medical Operations and Emergency Response Coordinator to coordinate CBP emergency response coordination and Emergency Operations Center support

  • Provide subject matter contributions in the areas of exposure assessment, including exposure model selection, exposure model inputs, exposure model implementation and evaluations, qualitative analysis, and overall synthesis.

  • Have a working knowledge of scripting and data management (e.g., experience with databases and/or systematic review software) to assist in exposure systematic review reference tracking.

  • Mentor junior exposure scientist in the organization.

  • Contribute to proposal and business development efforts, including but not limited to technical proposal writing.

  • As part of pre-mission planning, lead, and conduct environment health threat assessments to include threat mitigation strategies

  • Participate in various meetings and workgroups to collect project/mission requirements, and assist with technical aspects of health protection planning

  • Communicate planning concepts to the SOMO and other key stakeholders, both verbally and through graphic/written reports

  • Provide guidance and support to CBP environmental health protection logistics, planning, and training efforts

  • Other duties as assigned





  • 1-3 years of professional experience.

  • Advanced degree (at least Master's degree) in environmental science, environmental engineering, chemistry, or related environmental health science (epidemiology, toxicology)

  • Previous experience with quantitative and qualitative environmental exposure analysis; experience with systematic review is preferred.

  • Experience as a task/program manager.

  • Experience with government programs (preferably U.S. EPA or NIEHS)

  • Must be able to acquire and maintain a secret level clearance.

  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and be comfortable with skilled building and maintaining relationships with partners across the federal government.

  • High degree of independence, initiative, and follow-through on a wide range of sensitive, complex, and program issues.

  • This position is designated as mission critical.

Physical Requirements:

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Position may require typing and reading from a computer screen. Must have sufficient mobility, including but not limited to bending, reaching, and kneeling to complete daily duties in a timely and efficient manner. There is a possibility that due to parking availability and location of work, walking moderate to long distance may be required. Possible lifting up to 50 lbs.
