Hood Industries, Inc. is a blend of wood manufacturing and distribution concerns that include two plywood and four lumber manufacturing plants, and fifteen specialty wood product distribution operations, located in fourteen states serving the northeast, southeast and southwest United States.

Position overview:

Plan and supervise planer mill operations within the sawmill. Train employees in proper work methods, group procedures, and safe work practices. Ensure that equipment and work areas are maintained properly. Work with immediate superior to plan operations and schedule work.

A Day in the Life:

  • Supervise planer mill operations to ensure planned output at the highest practical efficiency. Work with peers and supervisor to develop production schedules and budgets and to coordinate movement of material in and out of work area. Resolve operating, scheduling, and production issues as needed.
  • Ensure that all work is carried out in a safe manner and that all areas are free of work hazards. Ensure that proper safety training is provided to employees and that all company safety policies and practices are followed. Set a personal example by observing all safe work practices.
  • Ensure that production meets appropriate quality standards and product specifications (e.g. finish, grade, size, packaging, etc. Test or sample production to confirm quality and adherence to specifications.
  • Ensure that all machinery, equipment, and work areas are maintained properly. Work with Maintenance to coordinate preventive maintenance, expedite repairs, and schedule equipment updates, additions, and/or replacements.
  • Provide ongoing coaching and reinforcement to employees. Observe workers for potential future leadership potential. Observe and apply all Hood human resources, safety, and related policies.
  • Prepare required operating reports (e.g. work hours, production levels, quality testing, etc.). Maintain appropriate and required operating, regulatory, and human resources records.

  • Strong organizational, leadership and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the proven ability to work effectively in a highly interactive team environment.
  • Detail/results oriented with the ability to analyze data to determine root causes of problems and trends.
  • Must have the ability to coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Good judgment with the ability to make timely and sound decisions.
  • Computer expertise including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Required education/experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years of lumber and/or plywood plant experience, including extensive experience or familiarity with planer operations.
  • Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience in manufacturing plant operations
