POSITION: Barista

Baristas are responsible for mastering all coffee and non-coffee drinks on Hook & Press’ menu and are able to execute them with exceptional skill and attention to detail. Our Baristas are responsible for creating thoughtful, personalized experiences for our guests by welcoming them into the shop, happily answering questions, ringing up their order and preparing beverages. 

Our Baristas’ daily interactions with each individual guest are a vital part of what makes the Hook & Press experience so special. Our unique donuts, drinks and menu speak for themselves, but it takes an awesome front of house team to make our guests' experience a remarkable one. Baristas report directly to the Lead Barista, who reports to the Store Manager. All baristas will be cross-trained on Guest Ambassador duties, which include maintaining a familiarity with the entire food menu and packaging donut orders.

WHO WE ARE

Hook & Press is an artisan donut shop that focuses on scratch-made, craft specialty donuts as well as a limited morning menu featuring signature breakfast sandwiches and tartines. We use high quality ingredients and rotate our donut flavors to showcase the best of what’s in season. Naturally, we avoid artificial ingredients and preservatives wherever possible because our customers deserve the best! We hold our beverage program in as high regard as we do our donuts, serving Santa Barbara-based Coastal Coffee Collective coffee drinks and locally crafted beer and wine. But we firmly believe that what keeps people coming back to Hook & Press is our obsession with providing an outstanding customer service experience. We strive to be a place that welcomes every guest with a smile and serves up good vibes, great drinks and amazing food and donuts each time. This all starts with you!

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Like anyone else on our team, Baristas must provide friendly and individualized attention towards each guest. Baristas will complete training with the Lead Barista to master advanced coffee-making skills, build a strong foundation of knowledge on the types of coffee and non-coffee products we use (including beer and wine) and their tasting notes, gain exceptional hospitality skills, and learn how to handle many different situations that may arise at the bar. 

SKILLS

• Previous Barista experience is required
• Excellent punctuality and reliable transportation to and from work
• Passionate about coffee
• A friendly attitude and team player mentality- these are non-negotiable
• Excellent time management skills and able to work at a fast pace 
• Ability to multitask and set priorities
• Exceptional attention to detail
• Curiosity to continue to learn
• Ability to pour latte art is a huge plus

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality; follow the attendance policies set by Hook & Press
• Maintain a professional and positive attitude in the workplace 
• Balance customer service with a great camaraderie within the company
• Master the art of knowing our guests (i.e. who our regulars are and what they like to order)
• Assist guests in a happy, positive and genuine way every single time to ensure they feel at home
• Guide guests through the menu to find something they like with a welcoming attitude
• Learn and maintain knowledge of our changing menu to effectively communicate all ingredients to guests
• Maintain 100% accuracy when using the POS system, handling money and completing customer transactions
• Able to execute all beverage orders with speed, accuracy and exceptional attention to detail
• Regularly taste coffee and to ensure that everything is up to our standards- while the owners set the standard for Hook & Press coffee and beverage program, it is the Baristas’ responsibility to uphold that standard alongside the Lead Barista on a daily basis
• Treat the store as your home; able to notice the small details (ex: the coffee lids are out or you’re on your last gallon of milk) without anyone needing to tell you first
• Keep barista area clean and orderly at all times; empty customer waste and recycle bins as needed
• Ensure that the products are rotated on a first in/first out basis and date labeled at all times
• Know how to properly brew cold brew and iced teas as per our recipes
• Responsible for set up and break down of outdoor dining areas
• Ensure that all coffee and merchandise shelving is maintained, cleaned and stocked
• Maintain a clean and well stocked customer restroom throughout the day
• Complete opening and closing checklists, always seeking to set the next shift up for success; have closing checklist signed off by the FOH manager or Lead barista prior to completion of shift
• Communicate any technical or coffee-related issues to the Lead Barista 
• Adhere to all safety and health regulation policies set forth at Hook & Press

• Ability to work a variety of shifts, including mornings, afternoons, weekends and some holidays 
• Ability to work in a standing position for the duration of the shift
• Ability to bend, reach, stoop and lift up to 50 pounds
• Fluency to read and communicate in English
• Food Handler’s Certification (within 30 days of hiring)
