General Summary
Responsible for estimating assigned projects and the upkeep of estimating systems.
Principal Responsibility
- Develops a bid schedule in consultation with Department Head. Responsible for procuring and returning plans for projects to estimate.
- Prepares project estimates in a timely manner by engaging in detailed and accurate plan take-off, and solicitation of appropriate material, equipment and sub-contractor pricing.
- Updates material pricing and labor rates on regular intervals to reflect recent changes.
- Responsible for maintaining estimating system, including software.
- Prices change orders on large projects.
- Evaluates bid results to track pricing levels. Maintains project bid database for future reference.
- Coordinates with the CADD department to insure that the installation drawings are the same or similar to the estimated drawings.
- Evaluates completed job costs against estimated budgeted costs to aid in future estimating.
- Develops "rules of thumb" estimating techniques and criteria for budget estimating.
- Coordinates bidding with relevant Hooper department(s) on common and/or team based projects.
- Interacts with shop and field personnel to develop better understanding of fabrication and installation techniques to aid in estimating.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
- Minimum two years technical education in engineering field, construction management coursework or completion of apprenticeship in a respective discipline. Prior estimating experience in the plumbing / piping industry preferred.
- Analytical and problem solving, strong interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills.
- General computer skills required with a good working knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word, Outlook and a good understanding of CAD/BIM software technology.

- Wide range of project budgets.
- 120 200 estimates per year based on size.
Description of physical working environment
- Works in normal office environment and makes site visits when necessary, requiring driving personal vehicle. When in the office, regularly works from a sitting or standing position with a computer. Repetitive typing and computer use required. Regular bending, twisting, and light lifting is common.
- Visits construction site in all kinds of weather to survey site conditions.
- Ability to climb up and down ladders and steps on site is required.
