What are the responsibilities and job description for the Physical Plant - Project Manager position at Hope College?

The Physical Plant Project Manager provides management for construction and remodeling projects from design to close out and ensures projects are within budget and on time; works with the Maintenance and Construction Manager to develop and implement long-term preventative maintenance programs. 
  • This is a full-time position, requiring flexible working hours as a management team member. It will involve rotating on-call duties shared with team members.
  • Conduct continual assessment of facilities to identify needed repairs and improvements.
  • Prepare Physical Plant capital budget and provide fiscal management assistance for college capital requests.
  • Plan renovations and new construction with appropriate college personnel. Develops, plans and creates specifications for various projects; estimates project costs; and requisitions materials and equipment
  • Meets with Departmental Representatives to discuss issues surrounding space planning, remodeling and construction change requisitions. Resolves problems and offers recommendations with estimates.
  • Confirms compliance with building and life safety codes, ADA codes, and internal security and safety requisites.
  • Monitors the progress of projects under construction and follow-up to insure user satisfaction, quality control, and compliance within the budget.
  • Prepares special studies as needed.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature as assigned.
  • Assists the Director in making decisions, evaluating, formulating, and making suggestions for the changing of departmental policies, procedures, and goals. Meets with various campus personnel and committees as designated by the Director, and substitutes for the Director, as required, at various meetings.

  • Bachelor degree and seven to ten years of experience in related career field preferred.
  • Must possess leadership and team building skills to effectively manage professional and technical staff.
  • Possess a working knowledge of budgeting techniques relating to both operational and capital expenditures. Ability to not only apply this knowledge to yearly fiscal spending plans, but also to long-range forecasting of expenditures in the form of three and five-year plans.
  • Must be able to problem solve and be able to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, policies, and procedures of the Physical Plant department
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Working knowledge of Microsoft products, AutoCAD, and be able to learn and use construction contract creation software.
  • Familiarity with operation and maintenance of refrigeration, air conditioning, generators, plumbing, electrical systems, security systems, and boiler plant systems.
  • Must pass a background check and physical examination and possess no physical limitations which would inhibit work performance.
