Hornet Cutting Systems designs, manufactures, and distributes CNC-controlled oxy-fuel, plasma, and waterjet cutting machines out of its Valley Center, KS facility. The company started in 2004 and has become one of the of the leading plasma cutting machine OEMs in North American through innovation and its customer-centric business model. Hornet Cutting Systems has experienced very steady growth of its deployed equipment base over the last 17 years.

Primary Purpose of Job

The role is primarily responsible for overseeing and driving the machine-building process from start to finish, creating the master production schedule, then fabrication, machining, assembly, engineering, and quality departments work in coordination and have the resources (manpower, raw materials, parts, and equipment) they require to deliver machines on or before scheduled completion date at the lowest possible cost to the Company. The goal of the position is to improve production efficiencies, team focus, and stats while reducing total costs. Accountabilities

  • Leads the production department’s leads and employees.
  • Manages shop leads and employees and shop resources to ensure strict Master Production Schedule adherence.
  • Holds shop leads and employees accountable to their role(s) in strict master production schedule adherence and getting machines out the door on time.
  • Creates, updates, and ensures real-time accuracy ofthe master production schedule using the Company’s MRP software.
  • Is present on the floor during daily production hours and mandatory overtime hours, when assigned, to ensure the schedule is being adhered to by leads and employees and that any changes that come up are immediately reflected in the master production schedule.
  • Collaborates with engineering, purchasing, quality, fabrication, machining, and assembly leads to stay abreast of constantly changing needs to ensure each department has what it needs to stay on or ahead of the master production schedule.

Elements of the Role

  • Monitors and evaluates each work center in the manufacturing process to ensure maximum labor and material efficiency.
  • Uses inputs from engineering, sales, and operations to built accurate, realistic, and practical schedules for machine builds.
  • Proactively plans and implements actions to assure on-time product delivery; manage lead times to internal and external customer expectations.
  • Plan and release production builds/batches.
  • Plans, schedules, and directs rework builds.
  • Provides clear and impeccable over-the-phone communication with customers and internal employees.
  • Inspects products prior to shipment to ensure they adhere to customer specifications and required recordkeeping.
  • Ensures work is performed/managed in accordance with the Company’s (and outside) quality system(s), also ensuring that each employee is tested and signed off on as proficient in the processes they complete with record of training/proficiency on file.
  • Encourages, fosters, and maintains open lines of communication between employees and management by being available to field questions and by providing consistent, real-time help, feedback, correction, training, and coaching.
  • Establishes training methods for the fabrication and welder personnel, ie; blueprint reading, layout, fabrication and welding, press brake, folding machine, saw, paint gun/booth, etc.
  • Evaluates and allocates resources to efficiently relieve bottlenecks within manufacturing flow as required.
  • Leads the daily production huddle.
  • Interfaces as needed with customers served by the warehouse to maintain productive business relationships with key end-users.
  • Makes recommendations to guide and direct shop personnel in the completion of tasks assigned within time limits of project schedule requirements.
  • Any other duties deemed necessary or assigned by management

Requirements

  • 3-5 years of production planning experience in a high-speed, high-volume manufacturing environment using an ERP or MRP system software; fluent and skilled in this area.
  • 3-5 years of assembly, machining, and fabrication experience or equivalent amount of technical training curriculum or practical application.
  • Proven successful in supervisory or management experience.
  • Results-driven
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Detail-oriented self-starter who can also work well in a cross-functional setting.
  • Solid organization and communication skills.
  • Strong computer software skills, including Work, Excel, Outlook, and MRP/MRP Systems. QuickBooks is a plus.

  • A sense of urgency in completing ensuring even the smallest tasks that are required to meet the larger machine completion deadline
  • Ability to accurately forecast ahead and anticipate and head off potential issues

  • Ability to read and understand production drawings and blueprints, including an understanding of welding callouts
  • Desire to learn and ability to adapt to a changing work environment.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug screening.
  • Satisfactorily pass a background check.

Education

  • Minimum 2-year degree required
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred

Hours

  • Normal Hours: 6:30 AM-5:00 PM Monday-Thursday
  • Mandatory Overtime: Fridays, as needed and occasional Saturdays
  • Presence when the shop is working overtime.

Pay

  • This is an hourly, non-exempt position.
  • $55K-$65K, depending on skill, experience, and education
  • Production efficiency bonus opportunities
