QUALIFICATIONS
Required: Current valid licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Connecticut.
Required: Minimum of 2 years management and clinical supervisory experience in a behavioral health setting
Required: Minimum of 3-5 years of experience with behavioral health population.
Required: Associates or Bachelors in Nursing.
Preferred: Master’s degree in Nursing, or Master’s degree in related healthcare field, management, business administration or current matriculation.
JOB SUMMARY
The Behavioral Health Nurse Manager serves as an integral member of the Behavioral Health Services leadership team, whose primary role is to supervise patient care practice and performance. The Nurse Manager is also an essential liaison between nursing staff, unit leadership, and hospital administration. The Nurse Manager, as a member of hospital leadership, strives to achieve a safe and optimal patient care experience, including excellence in behavioral health nursing practice, through effective collaboration with all disciplines. With 24-hour accountability for the coordination and continued oversight of behavioral services practice, he/she will assist the leadership team with all aspects of operation, including but not limited to: staffing, urgent medical and clinical issues, and administrative processes. He/she is cognizant of, accountable to, and adheres to, standards established by regulatory and accrediting agencies and the hospital.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Job requires standing occasionally for brief (15 min) periods. Job mostly sedentary, sitting at desk functions or at committee up to but usually no greater than 120 minutes at a time. Job involves carrying of documents, books, chairs or small equipment(i.e. audiovisual) items. Reaching and bending as is related to accessing file drawers and shelves for documents, positions would be sustained for no greater than 15 minutes. Fine manipulation is required as related to writing, graphing, or computer usage.
COGNITIVE DEMANDS
Position requires independent problem identification, abstract reasoning and adaptability. Quick decision making on issues with organizational impact is required. A very high degree of selective attention discernment, perception and/or concentration is necessary. In addition, a high degree of writing proficiency including attention to detail, adherence to all elements of style and ability to postulate. Position requires a high level of communication skill, including expression of abstract/complex ideas, use of negotiation and active listening and an ability to dialogue with multiple parties. Requires reading and auditory comprehension of abstractions and an ability to make inferences. Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide with all units of measure and the ability to perform these operations with common and decimal fractions. Also to compute ratio, rate and percent and perform arithmetic operations involving all American monetary units.
WORK DEMANDS
Job requires working primarily indoors, only occasional need to be out of doors. Job requires working frequently around and with others. Schedule fluctuation is frequent and at times unpredictable. Job requires on call duty and emergency response. Job involves possible exposure and handling of the following; bloodborne and/or airborne pathogens, body fluids, infections and contagious diseases, latex, antineoplastic and other hazardous drugs.

Handles crisis situations in a calm, safe, and effective manner, utilizing the least restrictive interventions and following the patient’s care plan and BIP.
Manages resources and unit staffing.
Assures timely and appropriate handling of patient/family concerns or complaints in collaboration with leadership team. Takes the lead in monitoring and responding to queries related to compliance with hospital and/or regulatory policies and procedures.
Performs quality and compliance audits supporting the HRO culture. Develops a quality improvement plan for areas of responsibility and establishes appropriate indicators for monitoring. Evaluates action plans.
Prepares for and engages in visits from licensing bodies and executes recommended changes.
Performs other related duties as required, assigned or directed by leadership or Chief Nursing Officer.
1. Communicates and holds nursing staff accountable to unit standards and policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, rules and regulations, including clinical best practices. Assures compliance to applicable standards of practice and adherence to regulatory and accrediting standards. Monitors patient care plans, unit-based documentation and related processes.
Provides leadership, direction, and overall performance management to direct report staff. Ensures proper orientation and ongoing training of new and existing staff members.
Serves as the nexus of collaboration between disciplines across shifts, including shared decision making with the leadership team.
Delegates tasks to appropriate staff in a courteous manner to ensure clinical programming continues to operate effectively across all shifts.
Collaborates with the clinical team and department leadership to fully understand BIP.
Engages in consistently positive and professional interactions with patients, families, and colleagues, demonstrating appropriate boundaries. Serves as a role model for appropriate and therapeutic interpersonal interactions.
