What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dozer Operator - D9, D10 position at Host Terminals?
In 2019, T. Parker Host acquired United Bulk Terminals (UBT) on Mile 55 of the Mississippi River as one of the largest bulk terminals in the U.S. Gulf, specializing in coal and petcoke. This 1,200 acre property in Davant, Louisiana is capable of extensive loading, discharging and storage – with deep-water docks, fleeting capacity for 500 barges and over 40 pieces of heavy equipment to handle cargo loads.
Since the acquisition, HOST has made extensive improvements in systems and equipment, making the facility safer, more environmentally friendly, and more efficient to better serve our customers.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
[OPERATIONS FUNCTIONS]
- Performs a wide variety of tasks involving mobile and fixed equipment operation, conveyer systems barge un loadings and vessel loadings. Assist operators and maintenance personnel. Work under direct or indirect supervisor.
- Operate D6, D10 dozers, and large front end Loader to build and maintain piles of coal and petroleum coke in line with management pile size instructions. Push product to reclaiming machine in efficient manner to expedite the loading of marine vessels.
- Operate any other heavy equipment as needed to perform any work for which the equipment is designed, and operator is qualified for.
- Maintains housekeeping standards as part of fire safety program or as designated by location staff/management.
- Performs a variety of duties included, but not limited to the attached task lists.
- Demonstrate and maintain behaviors that proactively support safe work practices while recognizing and communicating conditions of potential risk.
- Know and use established safety rules and regulations including “lock out- tag out” procedures.
[MAINTENANCE]
- Responsible for checking equipment for damage or repairs needed and reporting information to Maintenance Supervisor or Terminal Manager.
- Make regular inspections of the transport systems and perform minor maintenance tasks such as adjusting and lubricating equipment, cleaning, washing, testing, replacing filters, hoses, and other minor maintenance as necessary to maximize port systems availability and reliability.
- Performs minor maintenance tasks such as repairing, adjusting and lubricating equipment, gauges, valves, hoses, and etc. as necessary to maximize machine availability/reliability and assist maintenance personnel as required.
[ADMINISTRATION]
- Complies with all procedures to ensure governmental, state, and company certification standards are met.
- Performs all duties assigned by the Shift Leader(s), Operations Manager(s), and Terminal Manager to make sure port operations continue without interruption.
[SAFETY]
- Ensure that safe equipment operating conditions are met before and during operation.
- Works closely, as needed, with flaggers when making lifts or rigging equipment or material.
Education, Knowledge, Experience, Skills and Abilities Required:
- HS diploma / GED with experience operating heavy machinery.
- 1 year experience of operating D6 Dozer, D10 preferred
- Ability to respond to issues quickly, safely and effectively in a fast-paced, stressful operating environment
- Valid driver’s license and TWIC or ability to obtain a TWIC required
- Ability to work outside in all types of weather
- Ability to work on the river.
- Must be available to work varied hours, shifts including days/nights/weekends/holidays as required

Normal hearing to recognize and respond to verbal directions, unusual noises in equipment and equipment alarms. |

Climb into and out of vessels with vertical or incline ladders of 45 ft. or stairs (straight or spiral). Must climb into cranes of 60’ height to check equipment or deliver parts. |
Reach |
Extend both arms fully throughout a normal range of motion in both horizontal and vertical planes. Grip, hold and move objects with hands and fingers. |
Step |
2 feet vertical, 2 feet horizontal. Walk on slippery and/or wet surfaces. |
Crawl |
Crawl or lower self through hatch 18” in diameter. Crawl up to 10 ft. under tractor to check for fluid leaks or mechanical problems. |
Vision |
Corrected 20/40 must have normal depth perception, normal peripheral vision and normal night vision. |
Grip/Hold/Pull |
75 pounds. Pull in ship lines and cables to secure to the dock. |
Lift |
75 pounds. Barge covers (grain doors). |
Agility |
Must be able to stand on coal or phosphate as it moves, must be able to work in high elevations. |

Must be able to communicate with operators by use of a radio. |

Able to work a rotating day/night work shift. |
