General Responsibilities | The Associate Vice President for Student Development and Social Support (AVPSDSS) is responsible for services and programs that positively impact student development and provide essential support services. The departments include athletics, including related sport and spirit activities; mental health counseling, including crisis support, therapeutic support, workshops, and contract management; disability support services and related training, advocacy, programming; student life, including student activity programming, student orientation, and student government; the office of student rights and responsibilities, including student conduct management; and student wellness, including the wellness center, promoting positive health choices, and Fueling Dragons programs that counter food insecurity and other essential needs. Additionally the AVPSDSS serves as the lead for the behavioral intervention team and as the college's ADA/504 Coordinator. These departments are focused on the psychosocial and physical wellbeing of Howard Community College students so they can thrive in their educational endeavors. This position supports student persistence and completion by ensuring that highly effective, comprehensive student services are provided within the Student Success division and throughout the college. The AVPSDSS will advocate for student needs and connect with community resources and partners to ensure that students are served holistically. They serve on the Student Success team and report to the Vice President of Student Success. In collaboration with the AVP of Enrollment Services and the AVP of Advising and Retention, they will create an ecosystem of asset-informed, equitable support that promotes college access, success, and degree completion and/or transfer. The AVPSDSS participates in all aspects of college-wide planning in support of the mission and goals of the college, including meeting the needs of a diverse student population and creating a learning environment where all students can succeed. Duties of the AVPSDSS include budget development and management; staffing and employee performance evaluation; staff development and training; strategic planning; outcomes assessment; preparation and submission of college, county, state and federal reports, and grant development and compliance related to student development. |
Work Performed | Provides daily leadership and supervision to the offices and programs under the Student Development and Social Support area, which includes budget development and management, employee performance evaluation, staff development, strategic planning, and outcomes assessment via regular evaluation of data and metrics. In collaboration with the AVP of enrollment services and the AVP of Advising and Retention, and reporting to the Vice President of Student Success, creates an ecosystem of asset-informed, equitable support that promotes college access, success, and degree completion and/or transfer. Develops the program outcomes for the student development and social support functional areas in conjunction with the director. Proactively monitors those outcomes and develops plans of action for improvement based on the assessment of those outcomes. Collaborates and works effectively with college stakeholders including students, staff, faculty, and the public. Collaborates closely with Teaching and Learning to promote student success inside and outside of the classroom, leading training/professional development in areas such as disability support services, essential needs awareness and advocacy, and student mental health support so the college is fluent in the language and practice of student social support resources. Promotes the athletics division mission to support the well being and success of student athletes, building leaders in their sports and in the world around them. Supervises the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities, ensuring student conduct procedures function to promote the safety of the campus and the well-being of the student. Develops, implements, monitors and revises policies and procedures relating to the student development functional area in collaboration with the Vice President of Student Success. Researches, develops, and successfully implements grant opportunities for student development departments. Prepares and submits college, county, state, and federal reports when needed for student development and social support departments. Leads the college's behavioral intervention team, ASSIST (Assessment and Intervention for Students Team) assessing and supporting students of concern and helping to initiate appropriate responses to specific behavioral problems such as suicidal ideation, threats of harm to self or others, and other behaviors that demonstrate a significant disruption to the college community. The team provides referrals for early intervention and support for identified students to help facilitate a successful outcome for the student's well-being and the safety of the college community. Remains current or leads in issues and best practices in higher education, specifically in areas of direct supervisory responsibility. Serves as the college's ADA/504 Coordinator serving students and conducts grievance hearings as needed in accordance with the College's ADA grievance procedure for students. Ensures the professional development and current best practices of the Student Development and Social Support Resources personnel so students and staff alike are able to perform at their best. Represents the Vice President of Student Success on college committees and contributes to the well-being of the college culture. Provides signature authority and supervision in the absence of the Vice President of Student Success as needed. Coordinates other projects under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services. |

Other Knowledge Required | * Master's degree in counseling, education, student personnel development or related field. * Five years supervisory experience in athletics, counseling, disability support services, student conduct, student life, or related student development services is required. * Experience in delivering innovative programs that promote graduation, transfer, and student well-being is required. * Experience in assessment and evaluation of program effectiveness is required. * Experience with diversity, equity and inclusion is required. * A working knowledge of or work experience in two or more areas of student of student development including experience managing programs or services are highly desirable. * Knowledge of ADA/504 and behavioral intervention teams is highly desirable. * A proven record of collaboration. * Ability to think strategically and articulate short- and long-term needs for student development, student achievement and student engagement. * Knowledge and awareness of current trends and issues in higher education related to student development. * Demonstrated critical thinking, analytical, problem solving, time management and negotiation skills. * Skill in planning and executing projects and establishing and meeting priorities. * Proven ability to manage numerous complex activities within a multifaceted system. * Proven ability to build team support and develop collegial, collaborative working relationships with a broad range of internal and external constituencies. * Ability to interpret and apply federal, State, local, and College policies, procedures, and regulations including FERPA and 504/ADA. * Demonstrates highly effective interpersonal and communication skills. * Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. * Ability to maintain strict confidentiality. * Ability to collaborate and support faculty and academic affairs, as well as enrollment services areas. * Demonstrates empathetic regard for students. * Knowledge of psychosocial issues and intervention strategies. * Demonstrated history of successful achievement with contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion. * Demonstrates competence and experience in integrating student development and instructional programs and services. * Demonstrates successful planning, budgeting and supervisory experience. * Performs all duties while considering the impact of any actions on the college's sustainability initiatives in the areas of environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic prosperity. |
