General Responsibilities | GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES Supervise grounds staff in the maintaining and improvement of the physical environment of the campus grounds This includes exterior areas of campus such as lawns, athletic fields, sidewalks, campus roads, parking lots, flower beds and wooded areas. The grounds supervisor will be responsible for minor repairs and maintenance procedures on facilities fleet and equipment utilized in groundskeeping. The grounds supervisor is responsible for the hiring of staff, performance management and disciplinary actions. This position categorized as essential personnel and must be available in emergency situations such as snow removal. The grounds supervisor oversees and coordinates the activities of landscaping contractors and vendors performing grounds work. The grounds supervisor utilizes a facilities work order software to create and assign work orders, PMs, record and track vehicle and equipment service records. |
Work Performed | WORK PERFORMED * Supervises staff in the grounds maintenance of all college exterior campus areas. Assists in developing work plans for grounds maintenance projects. Trains new groundskeepers in daily assignments. Conducts performance appraisals for staff. * Supervises snow removal team in the clearing of ice and snow for campus parking lots, paved walkways, steps and other designated areas. * Installation and removal of directional signage including but not limited to parking, ADA and Event signage. * Repair or replace broken rotted or unstable fence * Inspects work assignments of immediate crew for quality control and completion of tasks. * Perform (light) weeding of undesirable plant species from ornamental plant beds on an as needed basis or in between landscaping contractor visits * Planting flowers, grass, shrubs, bushes, trees and other landscaping * Inspect rain gardens and bio-retention ponds periodically; implement preventive or corrective actions to keep them up to specifications. * Mows wooded areas with small power mowers and edger's as required. * Water plants and grounds as needed * Prunes and trims shrubs and plants that are hazardous or protruding into pathways or sidewalks. Report hazardous trees to supervisor to be removed by contractor. * Supervises the removal of trash and debris campus wide. * Oversees and coordinates the activities of grounds maintenance contractors and vendors performing grounds work. * Supervises the performance of power washing duties as needed . * Minor Repairs of parking lots, pathways, and bricks in the quads etc. * Operates a tractor, skid loader, bush hog, power trimmers, vacuums, blowers, rotor-tillers and other similar pieces of machinery. * Loads, unloads, moves and carries grounds related supplies and equipment. Assists facilities operation team and other grounds related specialty teams in manual labor task assignments. * Develops and implements preventive maintenance programs * Works with arborists in planning and coordinating the placement of trees and all plantings in support of university sustainability efforts * May make recommendations for the selection of grounds equipment and materials. * Basic knowledge to service snow equipment and grounds equipment. * Attends required Facilities meetings and training for supervisors. Advises staff on important issues and topics discussed during meetings. * Inspects work in progress and work completed to verify adherence or compliance to specifications and standards; prepares status reports * Acts in the role of essential personnel for emergencies. * Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED * High school diploma or equivalent * 5 years of progressive grounds maintenance experience. Two years of grounds maintenance supervisory experience. * Ability to work under minimal supervision. Ability to understand departmental and HCC policies and procedures. * Ability to instruct and direct the work of maintainers, contractors, vendors and consultants * Knowledge of plantings, grasses, trees and shrubs and the application of fertilizers and other materials to promote healthy and sustainable growth. * Knowledge of the tools, materials, methods and standard practices used in the maintenance of campus grounds. * Knowledge of basic needs of plants to maintain them in a live and healthy state. * Skill in operating, mobile equipment, rotor-tillers and other commonly used larger pieces of power driven grounds equipment. * Ability to be flexible and constantly adjust to changing priorities. * Ability to follow through and carry out assignments. * Problem-solving skills and sound judgment. * Ability to understand and apply college and departmental policies and procedures. * Must be physically able to consistently perform job duties. * Some working knowledge of computers (micro-soft, Internet) * OSHA Safety Regulations. * Excellent customer service skills. |
