We are seeking a Research Technician to support the lab of Dr. Hopi Hoekstra in the Departments of Molecular and Cellular Biology and Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University. The lab is a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment studying the evolution of the neurobiology and behavior of deer mice. More information on the lab can be found on their website. The Research Technician will collaborate closely with two post-doctoral fellows to support two research projects within the lab. These projects will focus on identifying the neural basis of behavioral differences between closely-related deer mouse species. The technician will be involved with experiments related to deer mouse behavior, single-cell RNA-sequencing, molecular neurobiology, and brain/spinal cord histology. There may be opportunities for training in computational data analysis and field work, depending on the project’s needs and candidate’s interests. The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic about contributing to a neuroscience project, eager to learn and become proficient in new techniques and approaches, and able to communicate effectively with lab members. The two main projects we are looking for support on are: (1) investigation of the neural basis of a dramatic, innate climbing difference between deer mice that evolved in forests and those that evolved in prairies, and (2) investigation of the neural basis of mating systems in deer mice. Day-to-day the candidate will be responsible for performing experiments related to these two main projects, attending lab meetings, and performing other lab support tasks. The specific duties of the candidate can be modified based on the candidate’s career goals and interests, especially following the first year. We are ideally targeting candidates looking to commit to the lab at least 2-3 years before moving on to your next opportunity. If you’re interested, there is the opportunity for field work – however, that is not a requirement of the role.
