What You'll Do:
As the Automation Project Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and implementing automated solutions that improve safety, cost, capability, capacity, quality and profitability for the Company.
Your Accountabilities in The Role:
- Provides engineering support to current production equipment and processes, including assisting maintenance on machine issues (Controls and Mechanics) to continually enhance the processes.
- Assists in quoting incoming RFQs by applying principles of automation, manufacturing and economics to create a competitive advantage through automation.
- Researches new technologies and procedures relative to automation and controls that could be utilized to improve all processes.
- Self-initiates corrective actions for quality concerns based on effective problem-solving skills; develops temporary and permanent solutions to manufacturing issues to continually enhance the processes.
- Formulates mechatronic architecture of new automated cells, complete with throughput, quality control, investment, profit and payback to meet company goals.
- Designs with a "Zero Defect" mentality through automated processes and product monitoring and inspection.
- Designs electro-mechanical systems to meet the needs of the project and product.
- Creates guidepost plans for project success that includes timelines, milestones and corrective action review to ensure project stays on track.
- Guides and directs the mechanical installation of components, machinery and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Ensures machinery is designed with user safety as a number one priority to meet company safety standards.
- Leads the implementation of control systems for new machinery to ensure efficiencies, including electrical systems, programming logic, robotics systems, CNC and cell interfacing, along with inspection vision.
- Maintains and monitors manufacturing automation and quality of output on an ongoing basis to align with lean manufacturing standards and practice.
- Creates procedures and training materials for maintenance, operators, and engineering staff which may include (P)FMEA, BOMs, SOPs, AMs, PMs, Safety Documentation, Electrical Schematics, Hydraulic Schematics, etc. that is easy to understand and follows the processes.
- Trains other engineers and leaders how to troubleshoot the systems autonomously to ensure effective training for all.
Position Requirements:
- Education: Bachelors Degree in Manufacturing Processes or Mechanical Engineering preferred; MBA and/or Certifications in Project Management (PMP), Six Sigma, LEAN is desirable; may consider equivalent course work and related experience.
- Experience:5 years of experience participating in the automation within a manufacturing environment. Requires a minimum 2 years' experience with robotics and PLC programming. Minimum 3 years mechanical design experience. APQP experience desired. Knowledge of metal stamping, metal finishing, and machining processes required. Experience in process development within an integrated team environment. Engineering Change Management experience is also required
- Certification(s): PMP, Six Sigma, LEAN preferred
- Functional Skills: Excellent planning, prioritizing, and organizational skills. Detail-oriented and thorough in work. Also requires solid math, analytical, and problem-solving skills to effectively enhance the manufacturing areas. Strong understanding of the economics around an investment and how it affects the bottom line; critical thinking skills to recognize good investments from bad ones; project management skills is essential; solid understanding of equipment quality and construction; understanding of how each machine compares to others in the market; cost-benefit analysis; mechanical design analysis, hands-on engineering skills, with an electro-mechanical knack are also key in this role.
- Technology Aptitude/Skills: Advanced PC skills is required as well as Microsoft Office skills including Microsoft Project and Excel. Allen Bradley PLCs, Solid Works (other similar), HMI Software, CNC G-Code, Fanuc Robotics, Fanuc CNC PMC, Keyence, LMI, Cognex or similar knowledge required.
- Language Skills: Advanced written and verbal communication skills. Ability to train and mentor others.
- Leadership/Behaviors: Excellent leadership and collaboration skills; ability to listen to ideas and implement the best enhancements. Ability to be positive, conceptualize, and initiate projects effectively. Versatility/flexibility is also key to perform various portions of multiple projects. High quality and safety minded.

Reports To: Operations Manager
Core Hours: Monday through Friday; Core Hours are 6:00 am - 4:00 pm; will work approximately 8 - 9 hours within this time range. Occasional Saturdays; may need to come in on an off shift to get projects done. Approximately 45 hours/week.
Travel: Limited
Work Conditions: Manufacturing Environment; Ability to push/lift up to 25 lbs.
