Humana is seeking a Director, Tax to serve as the operational leader for the corporate tax function of the enterprise. This position is responsible for leading the tax accounting, compliance and audit functions to minimize the company’s tax burden and maintain its good reputation as a compliant taxpayer. The position reports to the AVP, Tax. This position will work in close collaboration with all areas of the business including accounting, finance, treasury, investments, corporate development, and legal.Preferred location is Louisville office/hybrid but would consider remote depending on skills/quals in Eastern or Central time zones.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Calculate and present quarterly/annual effective tax rate and review quarterly/annual tax provision, ensuring adherence to GAAP accounting principles under ASC 740. Communicate income tax impacts to Financial Planning & Analysis, Financial Reporting, and other stakeholders during close periods. Review tax impacts of SSAP 101 reporting for regulated insurance and health plan businesses.
Lead Federal tax examination and appeals processes under IRS Compliance Assurance Process (“CAP”). Provide support and coordinate defense for state-level examinations for income, sales/use, property, and premium taxes.
Serve as tax liaison to Corporate Development and Legal teams providing all aspects of M&A activity including due diligence, transaction document review, and integration of tax functions for acquired businesses.
Review Federal and State income tax returns.
Monitor, analyze, and implement changes in tax laws to assess impact to the business and ensure ongoing compliance.
Ensure accuracy of tax-related SOX 404 internal control narratives and processes. Administer access controls for internal and third-party systems.
Lead budget and forecasting function of corporate tax team including cash taxes, non-income taxes, and outside services spend.
Drive transformation of tax systems to improve accuracy and efficiency of tax reporting and compliance.
Provide support and coaching to corporate tax department consisting of 26 associates.
Serve as support to the business segments on tax inquiries relative to their operations including provision of tax documentation for RFP processes and review of tax language for third-party contracts.
Manage third-party professional relationships including external auditors, tax advisors and outside counsel.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
CPA license.
10 years of relevant tax experience – Deep knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code (including Subchapter L), consolidated returns, state income taxation, ASC 740 and statutory income tax accounting, sales and use taxation, property taxation and premium taxation (including its retaliatory tax aspects).
Strong understanding of financial statements and GAAP accounting, including an understanding of tax provision systems.
Strong analytical skills are required.
Demonstrate excellent communication and presentation skills both verbal and written with all levels of management.
Experienced in handling complex organizational structures, performing tax diligence in acquisitions.
Preferred Qualifications
6 yrs. of leadership skills in a corporate setting.
Experience with OneSource tax systems.
