Maintenance Technician

PURPOSES OF JOB:
This position provides support for all other plant departments by proper maintenance and repair of equipment, and assisting with mechanical / electrical related concerns in other job functions.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF JOB:
This job consists of performing maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting of plant facilities and equipment. Repairs could necessitate knowledge of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic or hydraulic components, and forklift maintenance.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
This job requires the ability to effectively use shop equipment (welders, milling machine, lathe, etc.) for revisions, repairs, or fabrication of equipment parts.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
This job requires one to two years of experience in electromechanical maintenance of moderate speed packaging or similar rotating equipment.

RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER JOBS:
This job reports to the Operations Manager and is required to cooperate and communicate with hourly, supervisory, and management personnel in all other departments with the major emphasis being on the Production and Packaging and Labeling Departments. This job supports other jobs by maintaining equipment in safe and proper working order. Due to changing needs, this job is required to work any shift and requires overtime with a minimum of notice.

SPECIFIC EQUIPMENT / MATERIALS:
1. Type/Purpose: Hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.) and powered hand tools (drills, grinders and saws). Requires general mechanical training. Used daily; this knowledge is essential and required.
2. Type/Purpose: Burning, welding equipment. Requires one year of welding experience. This may be required daily; it is essential and required.
3. Type/Purpose: Volt/Ohm meter. Requires basic electrical troubleshooting knowledge; this will be performed as needed; it is essential and required (110V, 220V, 480V).
4. Type/Purpose: Forklift driving. Requires forklift safety training to be performed as needed; it is essential and required.
5. Type/Purpose: Equipment manuals. Requires the ability to read and understand manuals. To be used as needed; it is essential and required.
6. Perform all other duties deemed necessary by Humco.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL OR ABILITY REQUIRED:
This job requires a good understanding of the operation and maintenance of reciprocating and rotating equipment. The ability to troubleshoot equipment, diagnose deficiencies, and effect repairs are necessary. The job requires the ability to perform basic electrical testing and to make electrical repairs. The ability to read and interpret machine drawings, blueprints, and electrical diagrams is very important in this job. This position requires the ability to adapt to changing situations and to perform under pressure in an effective manner.

PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
This job must be performed with a moderate level of supervision. All assigned tasks must be completed within the timeframe allotted and in a way that assures safe and effective plant operations. Good job performance will include the initiative to solve problems before being so directed and to maintain an open line of communication with production personnel. This job requires the ability to train production personnel or less experienced maintenance personnel in the operations and/or maintenance of plant equipment. Punctuality and attendance is essential for good job performance.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
This job requires the ability to be in a standing/walking position for a full workday. The ability to climb ladders and stairs or work on uneven elevated surfaces as necessary to perform certain job duties; repetitive motion of wrists in fastening, unfastening nuts, bolts and screws is common and required. This job requires the ability to lift a weight of 50 pounds above shoulder height. The ability to wear a respirator is required. Bending, stooping, crouching, and twisting is a normal part of daily duties. Specific vision abilities required for this job include close vision and color recognition.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
This job requires the ability to work in extreme differences of temperatures on a routine basis. This job is subjected to high amounts of equipment noise, toxic and/or hazardous products, product odors, fumes, and dust. The exposure to any of the above situations varies, with a maximum of two and one-half hours.

Ability to make decisions and set priorities to include recognizing important elements of the job, estimating time needed to perform tasks, and drawing conclusions about problems/situations based on provided facts as needed to identify problems and recommend actions for solutions, schedule work for self and others, work without direct supervision, and respond to emergency situations.

Basic Qualifications
