Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is currently looking for a Senior Engineer Charging Development - PES at our Superior Township, Michigan facility.
Our Team
Electrified Propulsion System Development (ePSD) is one of the engineering departments in the Electrified Propulsion Development (ePD) division (previously Powertrain) of HATCI. ePSD focuses on the test and development of EV range/charging performances as well as electrified propulsion components and systems for Hyundai, KIA, and Genesis products.
The Position
Power Electronics Systems (PES) is an engineering group within ePSD, which was recently established to undertake projects related to electrified propulsion system component test and development. PES's core roles are evaluation and development of e-Motor, Power Electronics, and Charging systems for North American market. This position reports to the Engineering Manager of PES.
Core Responsibilities
Support the growth of the engineering group's capabilities for production vehicle and new technology development.
Understand the department's business model, strategic direction, purpose, and mission and perform necessary tasks.
Lead the execution of the engineering group's goals and objectives through to successful completion.
Provide direction and guidance to junior engineers on technical related topics.
Support inter-team collaborations and knowledge sharing through transparent communications.
Create and deliver engineering reports and presentations on short term and long-term work activities.
Provide deep dive technical support for electrified propulsion system related concerns for both pre-production and post-production issues.
Travel both domestically and internationally (up to 15%)
Perform engineering activities related to:
Development of EV AC/DC charging solutions in accordance with relevant DIN, ISO, and SAE standards to ensure functionality, safety and interoperability.
Ensuring the integration of advanced features such as smart charging, vehicle to grid (V2G) communication and cybersecurity measures are in alignment with relevant standards
Developing and executing testing protocols to verify that charging equipment and systems meet DIN, ISO, and SAE performance standards.
Executing EV charging interoperability and performing testing using grid simulator and battery discharge equipment
Executing EV charging interoperability in public infrastructure
Executing EV V2L/V2H, charge scheduling and battery condition testing
Analyzing and interpreting test results, providing insights for design improvements and optimizations
Leading efforts to ensure that all EV charging policies adhere to DIN, ISO, and SAE regulations, codes and safety practices
Staying updated with changes to DIN, ISO, and SAE standards and leading effort to incorporate into charging infrastructure design
Collaborating closely with cross functional teams including software and hardware to develop and test charging systems
Identifying opportunities for innovation in EV charging technology
Introducing selected charging technologies to current or next gen products through active communications with production programs in Korea R & D headquarters
Researching activities with external partners including national labs, universities, and suppliers
Investigating of industry trends through benchmarking competitors' systems and setting performance targets

Experience and Skills
Core Capabilities
Proven track record of delivering complex engineering projects related to testing and simulation of xEVs and their charging systems.
Deep practical knowledge in xEV charging system components, principles, operation, and vehicle electrification technology.
Knowledge in xEV charging system component test procedures.
Excellent communication skills and has to develop/keep good relationship with tech experts from Korea R & D Center and counterpart teams.
Good verbal and written interpersonal skills.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or another related field
8 years of relevant experience
Experience working on electrified vehicle projects including HEV, PHEV, BEV
Understanding and experience in electrical measurements for energy consumption
Experience teaching and mentoring mid and entry level engineers.
Valid driver's license with satisfactory driving record

Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree in electrical engineering or another related field
10 years of relevant experience
Extensive knowledge of DIN, ISO, and SAE standards related to electric vehicle charging and infrastructure (e.g., ISO 15118, DIN Spec 70121, SAE J1772, etc.)
Proficient in relevant software tools for electrical design, simulation and compliance assessment
Understanding of renewable energy integration, grid interactions and energy storage systems
Experience with data acquisition and analysis tools such as ETAS/INCA/MDA, Vector CAN and MATLAB/Simulink
