Job Description
The CAES AD represents ISU as a full partner at INL’s Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES). Working closely with the CAES Executive Board as well as BSU/ISU/UI faculty, compliance committees, INL leadership, and research-focused centers, institutes and laboratories, the CAES AD advances ISU’s CAES-related research and ensures engagement with ISU’s current strategic plan (goal four) and ISU’s integrated academic plan. As part of the ISU Office for Research Leadership Team, the CAES AD directs resources to support faculty/ staff research, including collaborative interdisciplinary and inter-institutional research. If a Pocatello-area resident, the CAES AD is expected to be present in the Idaho Falls CAES campus at least one day per week (two days/week for the first 3-6 months), and if an Idaho Falls-area resident, to be present in Pocatello at least one day per week. The CAES AD reports to the ISU Vice President for Research.

The Center for Advanced Energy Studies (CAES) is a research, education, and innovation consortium between Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Boise State University (BSU), Idaho State University (ISU), and University of Idaho (UI), collectively known as the CAES "Members”. Through its collaborative structure, CAES leverages the efforts, resources, expertise, facilities, and equipment of these four research institutions.
The Members' goal is to develop CAES into a nationally recognized research, education, and innovation center, consistent with the CAES Mission and with the respective missions of the CAES Members. Each Member has the responsibility to work actively towards fulfilling the CAES Mission and to cooperate with each other to further CAES objectives:
- To provide leadership and guidance in accomplishing these objectives, each CAES University shall appoint a CAES Associate Director (CAES AD).
- The CAES AD shall be an employee of the home University, reporting directly to their Vice President for Research and Economic Development.
In order to ensure the success of CAES, INL will provide partial financial support for each CAES AD by means of a Joint Appointment (JA). In return, the CAES AD will complete a number of tasks, activities, and deliverables as outlined below:
CAES Strategy and Activities:
- Develop Strategic initiatives in concert with CAES Director and Associate Directors
- Attend biweekly Executive Board meetings, preferably in-person
- Attend biweekly meeting with CAES Director, preferably in-person
- Prepare and submit Quarterly Reports of ISU CAES Activities to BEA
- Assist Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA) CAES staff in implementing policies, procedures, and initiatives associated with research, education, and outreach
- Prepare reports and presentations, as needed
- Provide news highlights for monthly CAES newsletter
- Actively participate in CAES activities
- Prepare for and attend annual Steering Committee meeting (late Fall)
- Work with ISU's Office of General Counsel when CAES legal documents require modification
C3/Cybercore activities
- Liaison with C3/Cybercore on behalf of ISU
- Help CAES coordinate activities and opportunities with C3/Cybercore CAES Facility
- Facilitate communication between BEA CAES leadership and ISU facilities (which maintains the CAES building)
- Liaison with ISU's Radiation Safety Office (through CAES Safety Officer) to ensure nuclear materials handling and shipping follows ISU's NRC license
- Coordinate with ISU/UI Idaho Falls campus leadership to implement ISU's mission and strategic plan in Idaho Falls ISU CAES Administration
- Facilitate success for ISU CAES residents - ~8 faculty/staff and ~20 students
- Assign offices, solve space and access problems, network frequently, promote research efforts, solve teaching/research problems as requested for ISU CAES residents
- Email communication with ~50 ISU Faculty about CAES events and opportunities 5-10 times per month
- Encourage ISU researchers to participate in CAES events, workshops, proposals
- Host annual Fall meeting at ISU Pocatello to report on accomplishments and recruit new participants
- Maintain ISU CAES webpage
ISU CAES Funding
- Prepare, spend, and monitor annual budget ($1M) with help of UBO and financial technician, monthly accounting
- ISU CAES Seed Grant - Prepare/distribute RFP, review/select proposals, monitor progress, communicate with PIs
- MaCS Seed Grant - review proposals and approve ISU funding for ISU users
- Discretionary funds - announce/find opportunities for supporting students, equipment, travel, research expenses
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills and capacity;
- Demonstrated research experience with INL/ CAES (discipline-related research will be considered);
- Administrative experience in research lab, research facility and/or academic department roles;

Terminal degree in STEM discipline, Associate (or Full) Professor rank
Preferred Qualifications
- Leadership experience in externally-sponsored research
- Demonstrated experience in and understanding of institutional research compliance (e.g., research integrity and compliance issues)
- Demonstrated leadership experience in strategic, collaborative research and/or creative activity initiatives
