Legal Internship

The IDEXX Legal & Compliance Team is very pleased to announce its summer 2020 internship program for first and second year law school students.  We are looking for highly-motivated law school students interested in gaining hands-on experience in the context of a sophisticated in-house legal and compliance organization supporting a rapidly growing multinational public company (S&P 500).   

Our Team

We perform a wide range of activities to support the growth and development of IDEXX’s global business, collaborating with each other and our clients to manage both strategic and tactical legal transactions, projects, and programs.  Team members partner with lines of business and technical teams on a day-to-day basis to identify, analyze, propose, and implement solutions in a variety of focus areas in including corporate, intellectual property, commercial, litigation, compliance, employment and competition (antitrust) (see our Practice Area descriptions below).

The Internships

We are offering two internships for students who have completed at least their first year of legal education.   Interns will be based at IDEXX’s headquarters in Westbrook, Maine, and will have the opportunity to work on a wide array of matters handled by our team, collaborating with a variety of lawyers and compliance professionals.  Overseen by an IDEXX Associate General Counsel, our program matches each intern with a Legal & Compliance team mentor, and offers the opportunity to interact with IDEXX interns in business, marketing, R&D and other departments across the business, as well as local law firm summer programs with which we have collaborative relationships.

What You Need

• Completion of your first year of law school
• A demonstrated pattern of high academic achievement
• Excellent general written and verbal communications skills
• Evidence of your ability to be a self-starter, and to work independently with limited supervision
• Strong legal research skills
• Poise, ability to engage with clients and an eagerness to contribute and learn

The Details

Schedule:  40 hours/week for roughly 10 weeks, May – August 2020 (exact dates TBD)

Compensation:  $24/hour.

Our Practice Areas

Corporate Law – IDEXX lawyers handle a variety of public company (’33 and ’34 Act) securities, corporate maintenance and governance matters, as well as business development (M&A). 

Commercial – IDEXX lawyers assist the organization’s various lines of business on a matters such as complex contract structuring, drafting and negotiation, IP, licensing, collaboration/joint venture activities, advertising/marketing compliance, sales, competition, privacy, export-import and other compliance and operational issues relating to our customers, suppliers and distributors.

Litigation – IDEXX lawyers manage litigation, administrative proceedings, regulatory enforcement actions, and responses to government inquiries, and provide advice regarding dispute resolution and litigation avoidance to lines of business and corporate functions on a variety of matters.

Compliance – IDEXX lawyers provide proactive and timely guidance and assistance to the various lines of business on compliance matters including anti-bribery and corruption, data privacy and governance, and trade compliance, ensuring that the organization’s operations are conducted in a manner consistent with ethical business practices, IDEXX policies and procedures and applicable legal requirements.

HR-Employment – IDEXX lawyers provide legal support to the Human Resources function, advising the Employee Relations team and HR managers on employment laws worldwide, and on their application to day-to-day management decisions.
 

Intellectual Property (IP) – IDEXX has a robust R&D pipeline in areas of biological science, mechanical engineering, electronics, software and data management.  Based in Westbrook, ME, the IP function within Legal supports the various business units, world-wide, in areas of patents, trademarks, trade secrets, licensing and related litigation.
