What are the responsibilities and job description for the Landscaper position at IGHL?

The TWA Flight 800 Landscaper is responsible for assisting with the maintenance of the grounds at the Flight 800 Memorial at Smith Point Park.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

E- Connotes Essential Functions

E-1 Conducts grounds maintenance at the TWA Flight 800 International Memorial at Smith Point County Park which includes, but is not limited to the following:

Spring/Summer

E-2 Physically walks the memorial each morning to inspect for vandalism and deer damage. Check the entire memorial to ensure that there is no sign of environmental damage. Dewinterizes the memorial and prepares the site for springtime operations. Completes Spring/Summer Site Preparation Checklist. Reviews with Family Liaison.

E-3 Manages and coordinates volunteer and seasonal employee efforts (IGHL Day Habilitation participants, Red Cross workers, family and community members) to ensure that there is an adequate amount of manpower to complete daily tasks. Immediately advises the Family Liaison of any manpower shortages.

E-4 Completes all daily and weekly checklists. Files and reviews with Family Liaison on a weekly basis.

E-5 Ensures the memorial interior, including walkways, is free from dirt and sand.

E-6 Ensures all litter is removed from the memorial on a daily basis.

E-7 Tests the memorial irrigation systems, including county park areas, every Monday to ensure each sprinkler head and zone are working properly. Repairs, adjusts and/or replaces sprinkler heads as necessary.

E-8 Maintains all equipment used at the memorial. Notifies Family Liaison of any maintenance issues.

E-9 Ensures adequate equipment is on hand to perform required maintenance. Notifies Family Liaison of any equipment shortages or requirements.

E-10 Develops and maintains a thorough knowledge of all plant material used in the memorial and surrounding area.

E-11 Directs work crews to prepare equipment, tools and supplies for each workday. Organizes job assignments and ensures work is completed accurately and efficiently.

E-12 Designates break and lunch times for work crews.

E-13 Ensures all time sheets are correct and accurately reflect time worked on the memorial. Files, copies and reviews with the Family Liaison weekly. Immediately notifies Family Liaison of any volunteer related issues.

E-14 Ensures all equipment is properly secure in the shed at the end of each day.

E-15 Ensures that the memorial is properly weeded at all times. Immediately notifies Family Liaison of any weeding issues, including manpower shortages that may have a negative effect on weeding operations.

E-16 Ensures that an adequate amount of approved type of mulch is used throughout the Memorial gardens.

E-17 Ensures the memorial lighting system is properly working and replace lamps as needed. Ensures fixtures remain free from moisture. Tests the lighting system weekly.

E-18 Checks all drains on a weekly basis to ensure they are free from debris, sand and dirt.

E-19 Ensures that the security camera is in working order and check daily. Notifies Family Liaison if system fails to work or if county parks personnel fail to operate the system properly. Reports any vandalism immediately to county parks police and obtains police reports for file. Notifies Family Liaison immediately.

E-20 Replaces memorial flags as needed.

21- Ensures that the brick brochure holder remains stocked.

Fall

E-22 Continue to complete Springtime functions E-2 through 21.

E-23 Completes weeding and prepares to install burlap to designated areas.

E-24 Continues to deer spray and monitor site for deer damage.

E-25 Prunes and cuts back all perennials.

E-26 Installs deer fence and prepares the site for Winter.

Winter

E-27 Physically walks the memorial each morning to inspect for vandalism and deer damage. Checks the entire memorial to ensure that there is no sign of environmental damage.

E-28 Monday – applies garlic spray and ensures that the burlap and deer fence are intact.

E-29 Tuesday – Removes sand and debris from the memorial walkways and inner space.

E-30 Wednesday – Checks brochure holder and adds brochures as necessary. Tests the entire electrical system to ensure that all fixtures are operating properly. Replaces lamps as needed. Sprays anti-desiccants.

E-31 Thursday – Checks all drains for sand and/or debris blockage. Removes sand and/or debris as needed. Ensures that the Rosa Ragusa and Junipers are not covered by sand.

E-32 Friday – Removes any trash from the memorial. Checks the security camera to ensure it is working properly. Notifies Parks Department and Family Liaison immediately if the camera is not functioning properly. Reviews the entire weeks work and checklists with the Family Liaison.

33- All other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

A. High School Diploma/GED

B. Valid NYS driver’s license

C. Experience in planting, pruning and tree & shrub removal

D. Must be able to lift at least fifty pounds

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $17.00 per hour

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Day shift
  • Monday to Friday
  • Weekends as needed
