WORK SCHEDULE: Monday through Friday. 7:30a.m. to 4:30p.m.  


COMPENSATION: $83,934.09/year DOE, Exempt Position


SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Under the supervision of the Director of Maintenance & Operations (M&O), the selected individual will promote and support a positive safety culture within the institutional setting and assist with daily operations of M&O.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Acts on behalf of the Director of M&O when needed. Completes reports as needed and may serve on various college advisory committees.
  • Supervises temporary maintenance staff and directs them in the maintenance of buildings and grounds including but not limited to: Building 360, Huts, Building 5, Warehouse, Gym, Browerville Center and rental units.
  • Assists with overseeing the functioning of building systems including mechanical, electrical, HVAC, fire/life safety, renovation projects.
  • Plans for work activities, based on work priority, skill of personnel, equipment availability, and weather conditions.
  • Evaluates work to assure quality and compliance with industry standards. Performs routine and advanced maintenance tasks, facilitates inspections, equipment and grounds, and unscheduled repairs including carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work to support preventative maintenance.
  • Demonstrated skills in reading and evaluating blueprints and/or technical schematics.
  • Assists with overseeing preparation of preventive maintenance plans and scheduling of the building systems including mechanical, electrical, HVAC, fire/life safety, renovations projects. Works closely with the Safety & Compliance Technician/Specialist to ensure preventive maintenance and overall repairs.
  • Assists with providing a safe and healthy workplace free from recognized hazards and take the necessary steps to reduce employee risk of exposure to COVID-19.
  • Responsible for recommending and implementing renovation projects of facilities to maximize funding allocations; ensures that the facilities and grounds are maintained in accordance with applicable regulations, agency standards, and fiscal consideration. Seek quotes to ensure cost savings to ensure cost comparison.
  • Works to reduce the frequency and severity of accidental losses and achieve a workplace environment committed to safety and loss prevention.
  • Operates heavy equipment, including 966 DJB, D9 dozer, Excavator, and forklifts as necessary. Understands and periodically reviews the Ilisagvik College Emergency Action Plan and Long-Term Facilities Master Plan and supporting documentation such as hazard mitigations and other specific incident plans.
  • Monitors and reports on all automated systems within the facilities; includes fire protection, suppression and alarm systems; including scheduling contracted inspections.
  • Maintains cooperative relationships with other personnel, landlords, vendors, contractors, public and non- public entities.
  • Flexibility required in responding to after-hours maintenance and operation calls, including holidays, and weekends.
  • Performs purchase requisition processing, obtains quotes from vendors, availability and shipping costs.
  • Complies with College policies, procedures and administrative directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge and skills in one or more of the following trades; carpentry, electrical, heating, and plumbing.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with OSHA safety regulations. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Intermediate level proficiency with Microsoft Office; Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Demonstrated ability to interact effectively in a multicultural environment.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: post-secondary educational systems, North Slope Borough [NSB] institutions and organizations; Iñupiat culture, language, values, and traditions.
  • Ability to interpret and represent North Slope community values, customs, and beliefs for the College. Ability to interpret and represent College actions and western institutions to the North Slope community. Ability to support Iḷisaġvik College’s mission.


EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING [Required]:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five or more years of building maintenance or construction work, including a combination of carpentry, heating, plumbing, and electrical experience.
  • Two or more years of supervisory experience with a team of skilled and/or unskilled employees or workers.
  • Valid CDL or ability to obtain one within the first 180 days of employment.


EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING [Preferred]:

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent in Construction Trades or Journeyman standing in a construction trade.
  • 5 years of supervisory experience with a team of skilled and/or unskilled employees or workers.
  • Valid driver’s license.

The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Iḷisaġvik College offers health insurance to our employees with a no cost premium, and $50/pay period for each additional dependent and a low cost annual deductible of $200 for employee only and $600 for family.

Life Insurance - Iḷisaġvik College offers Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment coverage through Guardian Life to employees at no cost to the employee in the amount of $100,000/per benefit.
