Position Overview
The Illinois Department of Corrections is seeking a detail-oriented person to serve as the Carpenter at Graham Correctional Center. The Carpenter will be performing duties ranging from repair and maintenance to new construction. This position would be suitable for a person that has completed an apprenticeship program and is ready to join our tear as an energetic worker seeing projects through. Job Responsibilities
- Performs skilled carpentry work.
- Instructs individuals in custody in the carpenter shop.
- Operates saws, jointer, sanders, drill presses, lathes, mortising machines and other power tools.
- Prepares reports and keeps records of material and supplies used.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development to completion of four (4) years of high school.
- Requires completion of an approved apprenticeship program to qualify as a journey level carpenter.
Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)
- Prefers extensive knowledge of the tools and materials.
- Prefers extensive knowledge of methods and standard practices of the trade.
- Prefers skill and use of tools and machines of the trade.
- Prefers the ability to instruct beginners in the trade.
- Prefers the ability to direct unskilled workers.
- Prefers the ability to read, interpret and work from plans, simple drawings or sketches.
- Prefers the ability to make simple arithmetical computations.
- Prefers the ability to make bulk estimates of materials needed.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of concrete and building construction experience.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience working with building codes and regulations.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of supervisory experience.
- Prefers at least two (2) years of experience with constructional drafting or CAD equivalency.
Conditions of Employment
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires the ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero tolerance Drug Testing policy.
